Well I am told they changed what ever the cause of the problem was by the man on the desk as I had pre-warned them of the location of the leak prior to it going into the workshop. Now either it was just a O ring replacement or a larger item I will never know as I was never charged for it. And at the cost of the filter and oil change charging me for an O ring would be taking the .... (you can think of the word) a little and if it was a larger item thank you Mr Jaguar. or H A Fox.

so i've been trying to find a local shop to do a fluid and filter change, as i talk with them several have no idea what i'm talking about and one shop said with 160,000 miles on it to not even worry about it, that i'd do more harm than good. what are your thoughts, should i just do this myself?

Good!

It's not the easiest DIY but is doable. A good trans shop should know about the ZF 6HP26 as it's quite common now.

I just had my S type (155K) transmission filter & fluid changed last week and the difference is well worth it. He only charged me $350 which included the new filter/pan and the fluid & labor. It shifts much smoother and the annoying 'slip' I had felt at high speeds with the speed control on as it was accelerating is gone. The 'lurch' is not as often, as well. I did have a spark plug change and new seals because the oil was getting into the spark plug wells. That may have helped the 'slipping' that I thought was the transmission, but was the engine cutting out. It runs like a charm now. The mechanic said he believed it was the first time it had been done and that there was very little metal particles collected on the magnets. My mechanic here in Salem used to work for the jaguar dealer in Portland for several years and seems to know what he is doing. He is a kid and has his own private shop for foreign makes. He has done a great job for me and my jag. I believe my mpg went up a couple of miles as well. Now on the freeway at 65-70mph I'm getting 32-34mpg with my v6 3.0

Wink ZF automatic transmission website (Do you have a question on transmissions?)

You can ask ZF questions about your Jaguar's transmissions at this website below.
