S-Type won’t start – PATS error
My 2000 S-Type won’t start. When I try to start the car, the flashers start and the PATS indicator LED blinks rapidly. After 1 to 2 minutes I get a code; it blinks once then five times. Could anyone tell me what this means? I suspect the keys need to be reprogrammed and I’ll have to take it to a dealership to get that done, but I want to make sure it doesn’t mean something else before I have it towed. Is it possible the PATS isn’t talking to the GECM, in which case I either need a new GECM or the module would need to be reconfigured?
Any help is much appreciated.

Use your other key! If you don't have one.... make sure to get one in amongst fixing this.
AFAIK 15 means the car doesn't know the key so you'll have to have it (re-)programmed into the car.
Don't go messing yourself without doing a LOT (that's a BIG LOT) of research or you'll turn a smallish cost into a huge one. Leave the GECM and all other things alone.
I dread even to wonder why you'd mention the GECM.
The usual cause is jump starting the car (or trying to).

The keys are configured to the INST pack and PATS code 15 is "key code not stored in memory (also having 8 key codes already stored in memory) or signature mismatch"
The GECM is not part of the starting/running but the Rear Electronic Control Module controls the fuel pump.
The INSTPK and PTEC module need to 'shake hands' and agree on the key status before the INST pack energizes the starter and the PTEC provides spark and fuel.
2 key minimum is required for programming and all keys need to be present at the time of programming.
You could have a module or wiring fault or just need to configure the key transponders.

Thanks jagv8 and motorcarman. When I bought the car it didn't start. After some diagnostics it was determined the instrument pack was dead. It’s been changed, but obviously I need to get the keys and/or the instrument pack programmed to talk to each other. The wiring harness has checked out to be okay. The only reason I brought up GECM is because I thought it needed to talk to the PATS, but obviously not. Thanks again I appreciate it.
