Default Same codes...4 month later

2005 3.0 S-Type

Tuesday the check engine light came on. Last night when I had the parts store check the codes, they were the same as I had 4 months ago.....P1111, P1316, PO300, P0301, P0303, P0305.

The work order for the first time from the dealer shows that "NECC to replace leaking IMT O rings". The parts listed are 6 gaskets (Part# XR843536) and 2 seals (Part # C2S40669).

Can anyone offer a comment on this? I don't fault the original diagnosis or even necessarily that the problem has returned. However, if they're going to do the same 6 gaskets and 2 seals repair, am I going to see it again in 4 months. Is there something going on here that is more than the 6 gaskets and 2 seals.

When it happened, I'd just started the car and heard a faint ticking. Since I'd just started, my keys were still swaying and I held them thinking this was the source of the noise. When it stopped, I was satisfied. Then I noted the warning light.

Thanks.

Eric

The P1111 is good news. Being a P1xxx code it's manufacturer-specific. For a Jag (and I think a Ford), It's not an error. It's a status code saying that all the "readiness monitors" (google is your friend) have run.

The others you can look up but bear in mind that they're the PCM's best guess or best ability to hint at what's wrong. The PCM just does its best and should not be treated as actually knowing what's wrong.

I don't know abotu the gaskets but it's easy to slightly mis-align or otherwise damage one. Probably that didn't happen. Others may be able to help from here.

Took it in today. They claimed that it needed a fuel filter and injector cleaning. I pointed out that these had just been done on the 7th of June.....1400 miles ago. They did these two steps again. Then they said that I needed to use high octane fuel. I use 91 octane as the book calls for. Do I need to use a 93 octane fuel?

Even supposing it was the wrong octane, it can't need a new fuel filter let alone injector cleaning after 1400 miles!

Are you sure about the 91? I understood the minimum is 95 (not 93). Over 95 is also OK.

most of the southwest has 91 as the highest commercially available. Northeast is mostly 92/93 depending on where you go. Texas is like 90 as the highest available.

I checked and 95 is the preferred octane.

91 is about the minimum but the car MUST have been calibrated for it.

Vehicles do not like fuel whose octane rating is too low. Severe damage is a risk.

The fuel door has a sticker that simply reads "Premium unleaded fuel only"

The documentation on the car under "Fuel Requirements - Gasoline Engines" has a paragraph that reads:

"Use only Premium unleaded gasoline with a minimum anti-knock index (AKI) of 91."

From that I supposed that 91 was the correct fuel.

That still leaves the question of why the fuel filter needed replacement and the injectors needed cleaning after 1400 miles. I suspect that they were billed before and the work wasn't done.

As your book says 91 then 91 should be OK. Provided the book you have is the one (or the same as the one) originally supplied with the car. Sometimes any book (or none) is supplied when a car is sold.

Someone else on here may be able to tell their experiences of using 91 octane fuel.

You could probably check with Jaguar Corporate whether your car is adapted for 91 - at least I'd hope you could do.

I hope your suspicions about filter & injectors aren't right but they could be true

What mileage has that car done?

About 62,000 miles. I just had the 60,000 mile service done on the 7th of June. A fuel filter and some testing/cleaning of the fuel system was included. The bill was about $850.

The reason for my suspicion is that when I was told that this would need to be done (this time), I called attention to the previous invoice. Everyone just sort of shut-up then. I was excused so the mgr could talk to the tech. An hour later the car was released and invoice as NC. Nothing was said about what was done and I sort of got the bum's rush out of there other than the mgr saying that he hadn't noticed the prior invoice.

I wouldn't want to leave my car with them ever again. I wouldn't trust them to diagnose let alone fix my car.
