Default Sat Nav Retrofitt on S-type R

Well, I had been planning this for months, got all the pieces, made the harness but until this week the weather has been terrible and just recently all the snow has melted (well most of it!) so I went out and decided to put all this stuff in. So, I went out, put all the modules and units in, plugged everything in and turned the car on with my fingers crossed! Perfect! Everything works just as it should. The only problem is that I didn't have time to properly place the GPS antenna so I don't have a signal (guess its just under too much metal right now) so I'll have to fix that today tomorrow, but everything works! I don't know if anyone has done this retrofit on an S-type before so I thought I would just mention that I had done it and it went fine. I used a harness schematic from someone that made one on the UK site for a X-type retrofit and it works like a charm! So, to anyone wanting to do this, it's actually pretty easy once you take the time to understand what needs to be done! Now I'm like a kid with a new toy!

Where did you source the parts, how much did it cost and do you have pics!

Well, unfortunately I don't have any pics right now. I meant to take some of the install but then I got going and just kind of forgot! I got most of the parts from eBay, more accurately, eBay UK. I got the DVD unit ($200), Screen ($350), Antenna ($20) all from eBay and I sourced the remote climate control module from a salvage yard ($85). I had to make the harness, which was pretty easy if you follow the schematic and it cost about $80 for the wire, connectors etc.. I just bit the bullet and bought the newest Nav disc from Navteq. It was pricey ($200) but it just came out in December 08 so it was the most up to date and should be accurate enough for years. For me, the hardest part to find was the Nav Screen. There are a lot for sale but I have a heated windshield, which is not that common apparently in North America, so I had to get it from the UK, same with the DVD unit. Just more of these parts for sale in the UK. So, overall, I would say you can do this for under a $1000 easily, and since you can sell some of the parts you take off, you can regain some of the expense. The only thing that took a while was the harness, but I took my time and made sure it was all put together properly, and it paid off since it worked right the first time!

I would love to get the details on this change. Not having nav is my greatest gripe with my S-Type. Any chance you could put together a bill of materials, and link to the place where you found the wiring schematic? I don't mind tackling a project like this, but like to know I have all the information and correct parts before digging in. And, it's always nice to have the experience and knowledge of someone who's done it before.

I have an 04 S-Type 3.0; would this installation be common across all S-Type years and models (with the newer style interior)?

Thanks,

JD

Well, the best place for a how-to and the schematic is on the UK site.

http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/viewtop...gation+install

This is where I found all the stuff I needed to get it done. It is common across all S-types (facelift ones) as well as X-types and the XJ's as well since the nav system is standard, just the type of screen changes. Here are all the parts you will need (lists them on the UK thread as well):

Nav Screen (proper specs)
DVD Unit
Remote Climate Control Module (RCCM)
Antenna
Nav DVD
Custom Harness

It's sounds like a lot to do at first when I looked at it but as I started it wasn't that bad. I'm not really that great with car electronics but I still managed to do this! The thread is for an x-type, so when he talks about the rccm, you would need one from an S-type, same with the nav screen, but as long as you get the parts from an S-type, all will work!

This might be old news but here is a Kenwood DNX 9140 installed in my 2002 S-type Sport prefacelift.

weighing the options of all this, wouldnt it be cheaper to just buy an aftermarket double din, the new kit from metra, and call it a day????

Aftermarket unit would be much cheaper to install and update. But, original Jag Navi unit looks pretty darn good.

Jag nav and touch screen doe's look good but it is a poor system, with after market you may get TCM and camera info( don't know if you need that across the pond) and the Jag map is like a line drawing

Car details?

If it's not pre-wired you need to be really good at this stuff to do it.

There are good existing threads about the basics, with pics, both on here and on the UK forum. There are PDFs with details via the UK forum so best start with reading those

Though possible, no-one on the forum is likely to have, whereas a wrecker will. Or make your own - see my previous post above.
