Default serpentine belt replacement

hey guys was just having my tires balanced and rotated and was told I needed a new serpentine belt, the guy showed it to me and you can tell that it was bad. Just wanted to know if this was a part that would be better to get OEM or is a aftermarket fine? and if so which brand? And what do you guys think labor is on this? I was quoted 395 installed.....

Gatorback tends to be the better ones that people recommend. Go to your local autoparts store and pick one up.

I am not too familiar with the layout of the v6 vs the v8, but I know I can replace both my belts inside 45mins with no problem.

Harbor Freight makes this

Serpentine Belt Tool Kit

Which makes changing the belt pretty easy if you wanted to tackle it yourself.

The 3.0 is about the same amount of time to change.

There should be a "happy ending" included with the price they gave you.

I would get my belt changed more often if that was the case!

+1 on the serpentine belt tool.

I've had one for years and it makes changing belts faster, and safer. Way more leverage than trying to use a socket wrench. Just make sure you don't lose the little sockets down in the engine bay somewhere.

Two sessions! I'd say...

Pull the airbox, easy-peezy

just called Jaguar and was quoted 165 with tax for part and labor. what do you guys think. Regular local repair shops were charging 1 hour labor which is 95+ and the part which is atleast 30-35 bucks. Might as well go with the factory belt?

$165 sounds more reasonable esp since it is the dealer. Plus they know how to work on them, I know most cars are the same, but ya. I'd prefer to take my Jag to a dealer unless I really knew the shop well.

What's wrong with using a 3/8 in square drive Johnson bar?Really the most difficult part is removing the air intake parts.

The most difficult part of replacing the belt is putting the new belt in the proper sequence and pictures are great tools. As for the time you are looking at less than an hour more like 20 to 45 min.

Yes---it took me exactly 3 minutes to lay the new belt on the pulleys on my 4.2Lwith a copy of the the JTIS layout in front of me and my 3/8 in johnson bar in the tensioner.

Removing and replacing the air box and other plastic bits took me about 30mins

I bought the belt from Jag and did it myself while I was replacing my water pump and thermostat.

If you don't want to DIY, go with the Jag dealer for that price.

I don't know how long you've owned your car, but if you can, get more used to DIY, you'll save alot of money that way, and less frustration over spending alot of money for every little thing that goes wrong, or maintenance items like this. Hope the above link helps if you decide to do it yourself. ( thinking of that Peter Gabriel song, DIY...Should be the theme song for this site!)
