Default shakey steering wheel while braking

Title says it all. It's more prominent at higher speeds. Front brakes and rotors were replaced in july, problem started just a few weeks ago. I'm jacking the car up now to take a look, my thought is maybe a sticky caliper? Any other thoughts?

I've had bearings go bad in other cars and it didn't feel like this. It's only when I'm braking and the steering shakes like it would if the tires were unbalanced. It doesn't pull to either side while braking. I have the wheels off and the pads on both sides appear to be wearing evenly.

I would re-confirm the rotors are true and then proceed to the wheel bearings. After that I would look at the various bushings.

Try this...pay $15 per wheel to get a road-force balance done on your car. Call around, not everyone does them. If that doesn't work, THEN start looking at suspension. You would be extremely surprised how sensitive the jag suspension is at picking up these subtle vibrations.

I have had a small leak from power steering, have to put a little in every few months. Problem just started this year. I took a picture of the passenger side where its apparently leaking.

Does it do it ALL the time, or just most the time?
Does it pulsate until you stop like warped rotors or only when you first apply the brakes??

I had the same problem on my 2005 STR. Just do the simple thing and get the rotors cut!!! You will find all kinds of crap about why you should not do this and that the rotors really are not warped but have brake pad material deposits on the rotor. Well that may be true but I lived with it for about 5K miles and finally said "ENOUGH"!!!

I spent $24 at NAPA and had both rotors turned and my car stops smooth like a Jaguar S Type R should!!
I now have driven 6K miles with the cut rotors and my only complaint is that I did not do it sooner!!!

It's the rotors. I've spent a lot of money through the years fighting this in my cars. Some think I'm nuts at times. I'm having the reverse.. Very slight vibration while driving. It doesn't get worse when braking at any speed... So, I'll be getting road force balance, wheel alignment, and who knows what else until the maddening vibration goes away... And I'm the only one who feels it.... go figure.

All the time when braking. It's a strong pulsating feeling when I initially apply the brakes and gradually eases up but never fully goes away until I stop.

There's a NAPA down the street, I'll give them a call and see about doing that this weekend.

I have same problem, replaced all 4 brakes and rotors with high quality parts, did not solve problem. After inspecting the suspension I discovered worn rear stablizer bar bushing I will replace hoping that will fix.

Hi Phaelex,
I have the same exact issue. From speed when I first apply the brakes gently, the steering wheel vibrates significantly, then as i apply more force, it goes almost completely away.
Were you able to resolve your issue? If so, how?

sounds like a classic case of warped rotors have them checked inside and outside surfaces

More likely yet another case of pad material that has accumulated on the rotor surface. Any garage can remove it with an angle grinder and abrasive disk. This avoids futile, expensive and wasteful 'turning' of the rotors.

Machining rotors is neither futile nor expensive if it accomplishes the task.

On the other hand, going at a rotor with an angle grinder needs a certain amount of finesse to ensure that the surfaces end up true and not worse than when the job was started.

There is also Brutal's solution for uneven pad deposits ... stand on the brakes a few times in the dealer parking lot. Works most of the time. Fast and free except for the little bit of pad that is used up.

although i'm inclined to agree that the vibration would be caused by rotors, i would also check the tie rod ends for ball joint wear...
