Shifter won’t shift
Hello everyone,
So the other day the rubber lining (for lack of better terminology) inside of the shifter was coming apart as demonstrated in the picture. Was planning on doing some research about it but I couldn’t find anything about it on the forums. I just now went to put the car into reverse and it gets stuck just before I am able to shift. I’m hoping someone here can help me out with this problem somewhat quickly since I’m not able to leave the parking lot now. Thanks!

How far does the shift lever move from P? Maybe an 1/8" or 1 /4" at most? Does it feel like it hits a hard stop, versus springy binding?
if hitting a hard stop, watch this video and see if your symptoms match:

If that is the case, the park interlock solenoid is not releasing and that trim piece is not at fault. That video gives instructions how to manually release the interlock so you can get home.

Yeah kinda like pulling a seat out.....amazing what gets in there and can cause the power mechanism to bind up....hope yours is just a cleanup fix....good luck

Once you get things cleaned up, add a little shot of plastic-safe spray lube where the white plastic block slides on the rail. Not WD-40 or similar, as the oily residue tends to gum up and attract dust. A dry Teflon spray would be perfect.
Also carefully inspect that slider block. Specifically, look for cracking at the two slots that engage the stud at bottom of the shift lever. If the block cracks, it will leave you stranded.
