Shocks/Struts

Shocks/Struts
I am going to be replacing the front ball joints and thought I'd check out front struts as well. I know I need rear struts, but that's for another day.
My question is that if I go with KYB struts, do I have to change the mounting plates or can I keep my originals?
For obvious reasons, I don't want to have to change that as well. I think that it should be good for at least one changing cycle.
Same question I guess applies to the rears when I get around to that.
Another question - Besides getting KYB's, is there a cheaper option that won't compromise ride and handling quality? What type of struts should I avoid?
Thanks.

I am still having difficulty choosing shocks that will work for the front of my car. It seems I have the "clevis" mounting types and that they are not CAT, but other than that, I wonder if there is a way to see the numbers on what I currently have to help point me in the right direction.
I am not looking for anything spectacular, original OEMs are fine, I mean, the car has ALOT of highway miles! :-)
