smog compliance help please
Folks, I know the issue of passing smog check renewal has been discussed before, but I would appreciate some fresh feedback.
I have a 2005 S-Type 3.0 that is overdue for smog check but I know it wont pass due to codes. Specifically, 0174 and 0174 pd(pending) keep popping up. I know its a lean code. I've been fighting this for months. I knew the imt rings were leaking, so I recently did all coils and plugs, imt o rings, new map sensor, new maf sensor, new fuel filter, air filter, intake manifold gaskets.
Right after performing all this, cel and codes went away, but monitors were in process of resetting. I have attempted drive cycle a few times, but as you know it is difficult to perform in southern california safely.
After a few days, the 0174 started showing up with cel most times. Sometimes when i read the readiness for smog, 0174 appears on obd without cel, but if ignored long enough the cel will light up.
I usually have comp, evap and o2 sensor monitors not ready. In fact so far I have gotten 02 to ready, but never evap or comp. Now I read that if evap is not ready, comp will not go to ready either.
The car is not misfiring and runs good except for cel popping up and kicking in restricted performance.
I did not change 02 sensor. I conclude that my problem must be more or less isolated to the driver side (0174) bank. I guess I should change the upstream 02 sensor on that side? Can this be done without removing manifold again? Procedure?
What about fuel pump? Could a weak or failing pump cause 0174 but not 0171?
I cant afford a mechanic to even look at it.....take it back....I just paid $50 for a local garage to do a smoke test and they concluded no vacuum leaks !!
I am forced thinking I might have to do a failed smog check and then plead for a one time renewal pass exemption from California referee, but even then, I will still have a recurring 0174 and cel. Help please !!!!

thanks guys. No I did not read fuel trims. My pocket reader wont do that. I need to upgrade my scan tool so that I can check trims. Suggestions?
Also, from reading Gus' link above, I am inclined to recheck that mas sensor. To be honest, I did put in a new one, but it was one from Autozone that reference guide said was compatible. It was perfect fit and harness mated fine. Is it critical that the mas sensor is a hoity toity Jaguar original?
CEL did not come on yesterday, but when I scanned it, it showed 0174 and 1000 codes. Down to 2 monitors not ready.....evap and comp.
Mechanic said smoke test revealed no vac leaks anywhere. Wondering if a battery disconnect reset would do any good?

Gus, I don't have a scan tool that will read fuel trim. What should I get and where?
Also, I could not find the fuel injector cleaner you recommended, but I have dosed it with what was locally available. Twice now. Last time with Chevron Techron injector cleaner to tank about 1/2 full.
The car drives fine and no misfire of other codes are popping up. But the 0174 will not stay off for a single commute each day. I clear it every day and try again. When it comes on, then I get 3 monitors not ready....comp, evap, 02 sensor. Sometimes the 02 sensor does not go to incomplete but I can not get past comp and evap. Local garage smoke tested for leaks and found none. I can not get this car smogged until I at least get comp off, leaving only evap incomplete, but from what I read, comp will not go to ready if any other monitor is incomplete. I need more help please. Senior citizen on fixed income with a car that needs to be driven and no cash to continue to investigate or buy another car. yikes.

The P0174 is for bank 2 and that is on the left facing out. Because you are not getting a code for bank 1 the lean code for bank 2 is what I would focus on. Any problem with the MAFS or fuel presented to the engine would throw a code on both sides. After you added the fuel treatment did the car run better and did it run longer between codes? Did you changed the O2 on bank 2?

Gus, the car seems to run great. No difference after adding injector cleaner. As a reminder, in effort to get the car smog ready and get rid of lean and misfire codes, in the past 2 months I replaced all coils and plugs, map sensor on back of intake, maf sensor at air filter, both imt o rings, fuel filter, gas cap, and had it smoke tested for leaks. I bought a new 02 sensor but did not install it. Still in my garage. I was a bit afraid to try that one. Since I seem to keep getting 0174, I remain suspicious of that 02 sensor on driver side (left).
Can that 02 sensor be changed from above easily, or is it better to do from below with car in the air?
p.s...yesterday when talking to a local foreign car mechanic on phone, he stated that perhaps the car is subject to a "software update" from dealer that would change parameters for obd based on year and mileage of vehicle. Does that sound right?

Thank you for helpful pointers. I ordered an ELM327 that is supposedly compatible with the jag 3.0.
I will report readings when I get it.
question......is it super critical to replace the maf sensor with a "factory" type, or is it safe to assume that cross referenced parts from autozone or rock auto would work just as well. I did replace it with a new one from autozone when I did the coils and plugs and imt rings.
I was going to change it out back to the old one, but like a dummy, I threw out the old one.
Could a brand new maf from autozone be causing faulty readings?
I will report readings when I get it.

Guys, I truly appreciate your ongoing feedback to this thread in attempt to help out a "senior" do-it-yourselfer with this issue. As I reported earlier, I'm in a bit of a pickle with a car that must be driven, but can not be smogged and an inability to fund a professional service to remedy.
I installed a new upstream 02 sensor yesterday on the driver side in hope of curing the recurring 0174. The car has not been driven enough since to reset the computer I don't think. I will be patient with that for a few cycles.
However, I did get an ELM 327 and installed DashCommand on my mobile device, and took some readings last night at idle. Here are a few readings for your response....
1. idle speed 734 rpm
2. map 35 kpg
3. mafs 0.6 lb/min airflow 4.98 g/s
4. fuel flow .4 gal/hr
5. short term fuel trim.....needle hovers on 0, then slowly fluctuates between -2.3 to +1.6.......
6. 1 stored code, 2 pending codes, no permanent codes
( I also have the climate control module unplugged and removed for repair, and that is throwing the pending 1699. P1000 still there.)
I don't know how to read long term fuel trim and the DashCommand app does not display a long term fuel trim reading.
Do these numbers help anyone point me in a particular direction?

Thanks for feedback folks. I installed Torque Pro on mobile and took readings again.
I have more confidence in the information but don't know what it means.
I idled the car to operating temp and increased rpms to 2500. Here are the readings I took.
1. stft bank 1 started at -3.91 fluctuating to -10.91 but as the car heated, it seemed to stabilize at -1.56 to -7.91
2. ltft bank 1 started at +2.34 but went down to "0" to -.78 to -1.56
3. stft bank 2 fluctuated between -.78 to -6.25
4. ltft bank 2 started at +2.34 and seemed to stabilize about +1.56
5. intake manifold pressure 4.0
6. mafs rate between 11-13 g/s (whatever that is?)
only fault codes found were p1000 (incomplete) and 1699 (my climate control module disconnected for service)
Not sure what to do with this information. With no vacuum leaks detected via smoke test and no other codes, the thing I think that bothers me from the readings is that ltft bank 1 went negative and stayed there while the stft bank 1 was also negative. Is bank 1 the side that throws the 0174?

quick added thoughts....after doing more forum reading as well as other internet sites, I tend to think my fuel trims are not that crazy, but please advise.
