Default Someone, Please Tell Me It Ain’t So!

Today somebody told me that the S-Type is nothing more than a Ford Taurus, two people, in fact! I know that Ford used to own Jaguar but that doesn’t make any sense to me, especially since Jag has been around long before Ford purchased it. I understand that sometimes “parts is parts”, but really, a Taurus!?

Would someone please shed some light on this for me? Explain how the exquisitely made (formerly) British vehicle is nothing more than a *gulp* Taurus. Give me the scoop so I can go back and tell those two bozos how wrong they are.

Jaguar benefited tremendously from Ford's technology base, manufacturing expertise and cash flow. if it were not for that, possibly the S-type and other models might never have existed, or possibly the whole company would be gone by now. For that we should be grateful.

There are no shared components between the two cars as far as I know although the links between the Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird are well documented.

As for physical styling resemblance (and there is some if you squint hard enough), show your friends photos of 'the original S-type'

and ask them why Ford styled the Taurus after the Jaguar instead of being 'original'?

Hi Patty. The "Taurus Sayers" are confusing the S-Type with the all wheel drive (the only 4-wheel drive Jag ever produced) X-Type. The X-Type was based on the Ford Mondeo (only sold outside the U.S) and Ford Taurus platform, using Ford's Duratec 6 cyl. block and pistons but utilizing Jag's heads. The now out of production S-Type shared the same platform as the now defunct Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird. Although the S-Type and Lincoln LS shared several technical items. The 6 cyl. S-Type used the 3.0 Ford Duratec short block but the V8's are Jags. The S-Type is more of a true blue Jag at the core than the X-Type. I had an X-Type prior to my present S-Type R. I can tell you with unwavering confidence there is little in common between both cars, inside and underneath. The S-Type is a Jag, and shared nuttin with the Taurus. Case closed!

Now, if someone were to say the car is just a Lincoln LS...

That would be a much harder thing to disprove

Taurus no.

X-Type was based on the AWD European Mondeo Platform, with all duratec powerplants,

S-Type is on the DEW chassis - Lincoln LS, new Thunderbird, and S-Type. Oh and new Mustang and XF, but in a bit different itteration.

Take care,

George

Had two Taurus, a 93 and 2000. Ex still drives the 2000. Decent cars but as others have noted, no shared parts that I know of. I really don't see any resemblance so I don't know where this comes from. And I'm a body guy so I think I know a little about styling. I've rubbed on both and the sanding block don't fit the same. I supect sour grapes since they don't have one. If anything, the old Hyandai sedan looks more the part but obviously stole it from Jag. Tell them drive an S Type and then the Ford and report back. I've driven both..no comparision.

People will tell you a lot of negative about Jaguar. But Laurie picked something up from this site. " You haven't lived till you can say.... Yeah that's my Jag"

Full agreement with Jim and previous posters and I'll add this Patty. Tell 'em it's all about the drive wheels. Maybe suggest their Lexus' a closer cousin to the Taurus in view of its FWD? But sounding a cautionary note...(remember? I totally agree with Jim (Bodyman) on the styling) but.....somewhere on this very forum is a pic of an 05 S-type from the rear and the Taurus' close sister the Sable (of unremembered MY-xx) and dangit...one could be forgiven for mistaking one for the other. You'd think a search of the S-type forum on "Sable" would pop it right up....but no joy finding it yet....sorry..will edit-in the link if I find it. But that's why I maintain that the 05 redesign (freshening!) uglied-'em up a bit!

It's not their fault they don't know any better (but they're wrong). It's the jag V8 that goes into the LS, not a Ford V8 going into the S-Type (though Ford owned jag at the time so this is a bit moot).

What's wrong with Ford and I see no point of letting Jaguar reputation down by just saying for X and S Types that these are rebadged models with a fancy name on them , by this logic it also applies to Cadillac Fleetwoods vs Chevrolet Impala (Big Bodies ) .
Then , let's say Lexus is a fancy model and Lexus buyers are plain fool to pay extra bucks for a toyota ? This is also wrong lol

For me, there's a lot very much NOT wrong with Ford. They have some great cars (the Mondeo is one). I prefer the STR, though

If the S-Type is a Taurus, than a Bugatti Varon is a VW.

The fact that the S-Type contains quite a few Ford parts does not equate it to a Taurus. As others have said, comparing it to a Lincoln LS would be far more accurate. Don't worry about what others say, just do your research very thoroughly before you decide to pull the trigger on an S-Type. Since you'll be paying someone else to do 100% of your maintenance for you, you'll want the best-cared for vehicle with complete service documentation you can find....

I knew y'all would be able to clear it up for me. Now I can 'splain to these guys how and why they're mistaken.

Mikey, the pic you posted...that Jag is to die for! What year is it? It's so gorgeous it takes my breath away. Want!

Here's the website I shamelessly stole that pic from

S-type Jaguar - Home

The original S-types were built from '63 to '68 so what norri mentioned about the F reg would make sense. Me want too!

A lot of good reading on that site Mikey.

I had to go and check and it turns out F was Aug '67-Jul '68. I didn't think they changed to Aug being the start of the registration year so early.

Actually the Ford Mondeo was sold in the U.S. as the Ford Contour (My daughter had one; a pretty nice car).

Also, I had heard the Lincoln LS was built on a Volvo platform.
