Sport Mode Revelation
I recently disovered that in Sport Mode, if you engage cruise control at speeds as low as 55 mph, the transmission will go to to 6th gear. For the longest time, I assumed that in Sport Mode, the transmission would only go to 6th gear at 70 mph or higher. Based on that assumption, I would typically go Sport Mode until I hit 50 mph or so then, go to Normal so that my car would go to 6th gear or overdrive as you will. The funny thing is that if you are in Sport Mode, with cruise control engaged and then switch off cruise, the transmission will then go to 5th gear even though you didn't press on the accelerator.
I will say this though, in Sport Mode in city driving the car responds a lot better and smoother to boot. I haven't got enough data yet to see how that affects my mpg. My suspicions is that it has little or no affect but I would like to get a few readings to see if this bears out or not.

I think the point is that cruise means the PCM goes where it wants (so ignores Sport).
Remember at all times it's an adaptive autobox (TCM) so Sport for you does NOT do what Sport does for me if our driving styles are different. You train it to do different things just by driving.
xjrguy even posted some tech info a while back which I think is in the Technical Guides.
