"Sport Packge" Indentification?
What easily visible features would identify an S-Type as being the "Sport" model? The car is question is a 2005 if there are year-by-year specifics involved.
This car has a grille that looks darker/different than others, 17" Jaguar wheels, and front brakes that, on cursory inspection, seem larger than one might expect on a car of this size. Does any of that mean anything?
Thanks
Doug Dwyer

Doug, on the sport MY 2005, I think the big difference is the chrome moulding around the windows (exterior), I believe the sport has black trim. But again what do I know.
17" rims are specific on all the V6 versions other than the STRs, again don't hold to this, but I believe the 2007s up get the Barcelonas as an option.
Do the calipers look like this (?):

Thanks for the replies.
I'll take a look at the calipers but I don't think this car is a "Sport".
I've done bit of Googling and it appears that, for 2005, a "Sport Package" car would have the 12.6" brakes and 18" wheels. This car has neither.
This is the first S-type I've driven. It's a very nice car. I like it and found lots of "plusses" and I like the semi-retro styling. The overall feel isn't very Jaguar-ish.....I'd personally like to see a few touches of "olde worlde" in the interior to go along with the retro styling.....but that's just me.
As my '95 gradually shows more and more evidence of its age and mileage I've been wondering what I might replace it with. An S-Type is now on the list :-)
Cheers

2005 Sport Package
According to the 2005 Jaguar NA files I have there was two sport packages for 2005 available on the S -Type 3.0 and 4.2
"SPORT PACKAGE includes sport-padded seats with perforated leather, S-TYPE 3.0L AND 4.2L (N/A ON R)
Triton 18-in. alloy wheels with all-season tires, 12.5-in. front disc rotors,
sport-tuned suspension (without CATS), standard all-leather steering wheel,
wood gearshift knob, classic interior color scheme, bronze - stained wood,
chrome grille surround, vanes, bumper blades, and trunk plinth, chrome
window surround/daylight opening."
Above was taken directly from the literature. It is as I figured. After 2004 the only trim with body color moldings was the R. Before 05 the sport package did contain body color trim and a dark gray grill.
Here is the content of the second sport package.
"ALUMINUM SPORT PACKAGE includes sport padded seats with perforated S-TYPE 3.0L AND 4.2L (N/A ON R)
leather, Triton 18-in. alloy wheels with all-season tires, 12.5-in. front disc rotors,
sport-tuned suspension (without CATS), standard all-leather steering wheel,
wood gearshift knob, aluminum trim, Dove / Granite dual-tone seats, leather /
chrome gear knobs, bronze - stained wood, chrome grille surround, vanes,
bumper blades, and trunk plinth, chrome window surround/daylight opening."
The second listing cracks me up... They list the aluminum trim and then also list the bronze wood and wood gear knob... Dorks...
In case anyone is curious. Here is a brochure picture of the ULTRA RARE aluminum trim sport package. Well, ultra rare in North America. I've seen plenty when looking at listings in the UK and Europe.
LOL... You guys knew I would pop in on this....

From my perusing the internet it appears that the Sport option was a somewhat rare thing on S-Types regardless of year.
Thanks again for the good info

Hi Doug!!.. I remember you on the XJS and XK Forums. You will enjoy an S Type immensely. I started out with my 89 XJS Convertible, then went to a 98 XK8, and currently my "05" S Type R. I drive it maybe 2 or 3 times a week, if it's not raining. And each time is like the first time. She's a pleasure to drive, and spooling up the Supercharger occasionally puts a satisfied smile on my face. A very comfortable as well as nimble car indeed.

I'm not sure on the newer models, but for older models I had thought the easiest way to tell is by the chrome around the front fenders.
If it has the chrome, it is a base model. The cars with the sports package have the accents painted the same colour as the car, just like the STR.
And I'm not sure when 18" wheels became standard, as my 2003 with the sports package has 17" wheels (with the larger brakes), not 18s.

The earlier (pre-2005) S Type had 16" wheels as standard and the 17" wheels were optional or included as part of the sport package.
In 2005 17" wheels became standard and the 18" wheels were optional or included as part of the sport package..
Here are some pictures to help.
One of the 16" standard wheels offered (there were more than one)
Pre 05 Sport Package wheel (again, there was more than one)
The standard S Type 17" wheel; 05 and up.
The 18" Sport Package wheel, 05 and up.
Hope that sheds some light...
