There are threads - which may not be specific to the STR - but be aware that Jaguar issued warnings NOT to clean the TB. It has a special coating which needs to stay intact and you run a real risk of damaging it.

Why do you feel the need to clean the TB?

because i got a code and it was for either the drive by wire or the throttle body. the mechanic said they had success on cleaning the throttle bodies and removing the code, and this was at a mercedes/bmw/aston martin/high end car dealership in chicago, but i was wondering if anyone had done it on a str before, i looked through threads and other jags it worked on so i figured why not the str..

I wouldn't do it based on a code without learning a lot more. I probably still wouldn't do it even then. A TB is horrifically expensive, and with reason.

Maybe post the code? And have you done all the things about that code in the codes PDF?

Yup, and if you have a code for the TB then most likely your TPS is bad, or out of range, or dirty. That is only a few bucks. What codes are you pulling? TB's don't fail all that often as they are a simple mechanical part.

Edit: BTW, you don't have to be a Tech to clean a TB. But like JagV8 said, probably not needed, or suggested. If your TB is dirty enough that it needs cleaning, then you have a more serious underlying problem I'd try to figure out, not just cover up.

Here there is a common limp mode code from moisture getting inside the Throttle Positioning Sensor or TPS. Here is a link to get to it and a way to reseal it from moisture. Also you want to check the cowl area which is the area below the wipers there is insulation in there and sometimes it gets wet and lets water just drip right on the tps. Hope that helps you.

On the TB of the STR they are electrical. There is a sensor on the accelerator that sends a signal to the TB to tell it how far to open. It doesnt use a cable like typical TB's do. So if there is a failure with the TB itself its usually something with the board on the TB that reads the accelerator. Some of the newer Ford cars have huge TB problems with the electronics. I replaced 2 for a friends Fusion because they are so expensive he got a replacement from a junk yard and that one only lasted a few months so we had to do it a second time.

Wow. Glad I stumbled across this thread. Was going to attempt to clean my throttle body tomorrow because there is a mild amount of gunk built up in there after over 113k miles. Wasn't aware of the coating of the TB that could be damaged by cleaning.

What lead to all this was my XJ threw a P1316 code and thought a little "spring cleaning" might not be a bad idea.

Btw, JagV8, do you reccomend cleaning the MAF or simply letting sleeping dogs lie there as well?

Have a Mina gallery intake installed as well. Your opinion on those things??

I've considered going back to stock just to be safe.

Look fwd to your answers....

I'd clean a MAF but they're very delicate.

I cleaned both the S-Type and the XK8 MAF sensors this past Sunday using a spray can of CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner. Made a world of difference, especially on the XK8. Both engines run smoother now. I'll be doing this at least every 10,000 miles from now on. Easy and inexpensive to do - just don't touch the sensor element with anything. Spray it, let it drip-dry for a couple of minutes, spray it again, let it drip-dry again, then let it sit out in the sunshine for 30 minutes or so to completely evaporate and dry out. Re-install, crank 'er up, and enjoy the smoothness....

A lot of the newer kits for throttle body cleaning are safe for use on Jaguar throttle bodies. I believe they have the same coating on them as Fords, and a couple of the kits I've seen specifically label them as being safe for use on Ford throttle bodies. The coating that is on there is not easy to damage or remove, you would have to scrub pretty decently at it. Even if the coating is damaged slightly, its not going to do any harm to the throttle body itself; the coating is just there to keep particles from sticking. If some of the coating comes off, you will just have to clean it more often. I'd be willing to guess that dealerships offer a throttle body cleaning service as well.

For the MAF, I'd do as Jon89 does.

Gents
I poured some methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) into the bore of the TB with out the engine running on my 2000 XK8 and let it sit for a little while ~ 5 min and then fired her up. All seems well. But then I saw the warnings about the coating. Anybody know what it is?.
The TB did not get soaked, nor scrubbed, so probably all is ok.
Thanks,

Bill

I think what it is gets a name check in a jag TSB about not cleaning. Molybdenum or something. Wish I could recall the TSB.

The bottom line is that ALL throttle bodies need cleaning sooner or later. But what you do NOT want to do with the Jaguar throttle body is to go in there with a wire brush and grind the throttle plate into oblivion. Enough members here have cleaned their throttle bodies (with appropriate products and techniques) to prove that proper cleaning usually delivers beneficial results when the throttle body is indeed in need of cleaning....

Yes.... but some have destroyed them or their precision settings by doing no more than was OK on older-type cars. Be careful guys! No wedging them open, no sharp tools like screwdrivers, no attempting to adjust them, and yes definitely no wire brushes. (I wouldn't even risk a toothbrush.)

Agreed. If you're going to wipe (not scrub), stick to an old cotton cloth....

The only throttle body I wipe is my 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck's. I don't believe you could hurt it with a belt sander....

But the other three throttle bodies all get sprayed with the proper cleaner, soak in it, and then get sprayed again. They do NOT get wiped....
