First post hello everybody

The cars made in 2006 are 07 model year cars.
The cars made in 2005 are 06 model year cars.
The later cars made from January 2004 onwards (05 model year) use the later and better Jaguar SDD software for diag. etc.
The main difference between 05 and 06 model year cars are the brakes. 05 had the Brembro brakes with multi pot callipers on both sides of the disk.
The 06-model year and newer cars have simpler brake callipers with pots on one side of the disk only. The Brembro brakes look better, the later ones are supposed to have better heat dissipation, but unless you are going to race the car on a track you will never notice the difference.
In the US there appears to be far more of the pre-05 model year facelift STR’s than the later ones. This may give you some issues when trying to source updated second hand parts in the US.
If you want to fit a modern entertainment head unit it is best to get a car without the NAV screen.
Other than using a FM transmitter there is no way to get a music audio signal from a phone or MP3 player into the factory audio system and the last map update for the NAV system was in 2012!
There are a couple of key things:
Make sure everything works as it should, including the A/C, remote fobs (there should be two) etc, and that the same key opens the door the trunk and turns the ignition.
Avoid any car with any fault warnings or lights. If the previous owner has not sorted these to sell the car they are probably hard to sort out.
Make sure the metal under the plastic sill covers below the doors and the floors is not rusted.
Look for uneven tyre ware, this is often a sign of suspension issues.
Remember this is a 16 year old car, so even with regular use and good maintanance history it will not be as reliable as newer car.

As a point of reference. I bought my 06 str with 136000 miles in april 2017 and it was in beautiful cosmetic and running condition for 6500.00. I was and still am very pleased. It had a remote fob issue and that was about it. I work on my own stuff luckily and now have over 170000 miles. I am a perfectionist when it comes to vehicles. If it has it i want it working and be able to drive the car anywhere anytime any weather. I have done a few upgrades to the intake and cooling system and rebuilt the supercharger. All hoses and belts have been replaced as well as suspension parts less shocks. All maintenence items and beyond have been addressed. My guess is about 6500 to 7000 dollars including tires and a rebuilt trans valve body with new components. As mellow said it is a 16 year old car. In my case i believe it has been cheap for what i have done and the condition of the car. I would rate it 98 out of 100 for overall condition. The other 2 per cent is very minor body scrapes in the lower front and slight wear of the front seats. In a nutshell if you do your own work and the previous owner has records and no major glitches i say go for it. I have sdd capability and that helps immensely. Needless to say i plan on having the car for the long haul

S types were available with a V6, a regular V8 or the supercharged V8. You have to watch when people are selling vehicles online, quite a few people don't really know much about the cars they have. I have clicked on quite a few vehicles online because of the description to only find out because of the photos that it was not what it was supposed to be.

same powertrain as str basically. I would for sure personally inspect and maybe spend 200 bucks for a thorough inspection at your chosen facility that knows these cars. When you test drive hit a few bumps and such. Speed bumps are a great choice

Just be aware that when you go to the air suspension as the XJ has it is very trouble prone! Good to see two new Arnott air struts installed but Arnott's best selling item is a spring conversion kit to completely replace the air suspension. I have installed one since it was a downward spiral trying to keep the failing air suspension up and working correctly. These problems only get worse with age and miles.
From what you posted I would continue to look for an STR. My 2005 was very reliable and I mainly had coolant hose problems as the car has like 23 separate hoses!
