Hello, after getting the supercharger rattle at idle, I removed it for inspection. I ordered a new coupler. The snout bearings seemed smooth and tight. I was getting a little play/rattle from the rotors and replaced the rear needle bearings thinking excess play was the cause. Reassembled charger and still getting some noise. Don't want to put car back together if there's still a problem. Would someone in the know please watch the video and reply?
I had a guy from superchargersonline.com take a look and he said a little gear play was normal if it had some miles. Said it should be fine. Anyone else have an opinion?
the click-clacking when you spin the gears quickly back and forth is normal but you should not hear any sound of them touching if you continue to rotate the gears in one direction. Then rotors should not touch when simulating the actual operation and you should hear a faint whoosh as they spin without any metallic noise.
The front bearings are more robust and longer lasting than the rear bearings since they are bathed in oil.
Are you seeing any wear marks on the rotor tips near the front bearings?
Thanks, the rotors look pretty good there. They don't make any noise when running in one direction. I think I'm good. I'll reassemble with new coupler.
Does anyone have tips at replacing the rear needle bearings? I have an 05 4.2 and have the protruding bearing that has the cover with the little hole in the middle. Thanks, Dan
Never saw or heard anyone needing help with replacing the bearings? We do have some nice threads on repairing the SC and oil changes too. Maybe find something in one of them?
For the bearing just contact one of the blower companies like;
The blower shop
PSE
and others.
If you want to DIY you can get all the parts on EBay or use a kit like this;
Those covers pop off. I used a press to push the old ones out and new ones in. Of course that required full removal of the sc.
I think I used a socket and 1/2" extension to reach through the case, since they can't be pressed in from the back. They come pre-lubed.

Thanks that helps! I took my time an got the supercharger out easy enough and took it apart last week. My real concern is how to get those bearings out, If I understand correctly they must be pushed from the back into the supercharger housing. Then the new bearings must be pressed into the housing from the inside of the supercharge.
Yes that's correct. I did it with a friend's help and a press. If you have a local machine shop they would probably do it pretty cheap and make sure the bearings dont get damaged.
