Default temp sensor and coolant issue

So if my car is continuously moving along the highway, and its about 35 degrees outside, and has no coolant due to stupid broken hose, would the temperature gauge inside the car still report the proper temp? Cause my car stayed at 0. I only picked up on something was wrong after driving about 10 miles and realizing my temp gauge hadn't budged since I started the engine.

After about 20min, engine did not make a happy sound when I attempted to start it. Waited another hour or so I tried again (just to make sure it would still start) and it sounded ok. But I'm afraid something very bad may have happened.

As for the coolant, the hose that connects to the bottom of the reservoir has a leak in which the coolant will dump right out immediately. Right on top of some electrical plug. Plus I have a very squeaky belt now. I hate this car!

If there is no coolant, the coolant temperature sensor will be immersed in air and not report the engine temperature to the gauge. You may very well have overheated.

Repair your hose, refill the coolant and pray.

For this reason, never ignore a low coolant level warning...it could be fatal to your engine.

Aggggh! If you've not overheated the engine and it still runs OK, best go buy a lottery ticket. This must be your lucky day!

If the coolant level is low enough that the probe is seeing only air, it will measure that. Air is an excellent insulator- it takes a long time for the engine heat to transfer, but by that time the engine has probably seized.

Don't run the engine again till the leak is fixed.

As a side note, I think my heat may have stopped working. DCCV?

The piece with the metal clip is where it's leaking.

That thought occurred to me, but I'm not mechanically inclined enough to know how it all works to know they're related.

But I have a diagnosis, heater valve and aux water pump need replaced.

That connection is hard to seat correctly. We have had at least one STR guy burn up an engine because of the wire clip. It is very tight in that area and not easy to tell if the retainer clip is installed correctly. Plus the coolant pressure will unseat it and you loose coolant so fast that's it's usually overheat time!

Glad you caught it in time! No work was done to the top tank lately?? That's when you need to remove and reinstall that wire clip connection.

I would change the DCCV as you are almost half way there right now!

Default It all stated with low coolant..

then i got a the restricted performance light on,

then I left the sun roof open just a bit on a rainy day,

then i got a flat ( oh yeah i need breaks too)

then i lost all the coolant and it overheated close to my house- i shut the engine off in the middle of the road- waited for the temp to go down then drove it again - it overheated and i turned the engine off again did that until i got it home-

all in one day-

i printed out a diagram of the radiator and I'm going to rent a pressure tester and find out where the leak is

I fell in love at first drive and out of love at first repair bill!

The sunroof may not have caused anything. Plenty wrong already. Any modern car engine can be trashed by low coolant / driving as you describe. Hope you've been lucky.
