Thoughts on oil for my 03' S-Type...
Just to start off, I have used the search engine and have visited Bob the Oil Guys website many of times. I just want to get the forums thoughts on oils for their Jag and mine. Having been a BMW 540i owner, I have always used Mobil1 0-40 and have had good results.
Any thoughts on Royal Purple? I have a friend here locally that can get me 5 quarts and a Royal Purple filter for $35. I have used their diff. oil in my wifes Jeep and was amazed. The $35 deal sounds good but will it be a good choice for my Jag?
Thanks again for the advice

alright, im not going to seat here and bullshit u im right, if u want listen and if u dont want to dont but here is what i gotta say.
Motul, Total, Amsoil, and Red Line are good oils. Anything else is a joke.
Why? Europe has much higher standards on what the industry can call a synthetic, and the 4 brands above meet the requirements. Mobil1 Royal Purple and any other one cant meet that requirement.
2nd there are characteristics to take into account such as flash point, pour point viscocity index etc. I studied these at the university (3 years of chemistry) and I also know these oils are better because i been turning wrenches for more than 5 years and people that change the oil like at 10 000 miles using these oils still have running engines (although u shouldnt do that!!)
I prefer Motul from CHEAP OIL STORE Cheap Car Motorcycle fluids
But that's my opinion, best of luck!!!

So that's what that particular smiley is for! I like.
Logan-
Oil, spark plugs and filters are probably the top three 'which one is best' topics on any car site. These type of questions are much like going into a sports bar and asking 'which brand of beer is the best'. Fist fights are likely to break out as neither side of the argument can actually prove their point- and we unfortunately resort to caveman like behaviour.
The standard message is to use whatever brand and type YOU like- the car really couldn't care less. Jags operated on bog standard dino oil, factory recommended viscosity for your climate and factory change interval (10,000 mile/16,000KM for standard service) are known to live long and happy lives. Synthetics would be a good choice if you're going to take advantage of an extended change interval, ie. going beyond 10K miles.

I agree with Mikey. Use a decent-quality oil, buy it on sale, and change it frequently enough to keep the oil relatively clean but not too frequently as to waste it. I like Castrol 5W-30 conventional for both of our Jaguars, and I change the oil & filter on the S-Type at about 6,000 miles because that is when it has typically turned from golden-colored to brownish-colored. I expect to follow the same pattern on our recently-acquired XK8....
It ain't rocket science and it ain't worth getting banned from a forum over....
