Timing Chain Tensioners and water pump
As I am new to Jags and have onyl had this car one month and am doing my best to learn about the engine...I am trying to ascertain whether the timing chain tensioners and water pump have been done (as I have the history stamps in the book but not many receipts) -I have heard that if these two things go, I might as well sell the house to pay for it !
Does anyone know how I can check ? Also seem to be two schools of thought, some service guys say they have never had to do the timing chain tensioners in the 4.0L, V8 and other people in various Jag clubs say it should be done...who is right ?
Also- A tip for any of you that own an S Type and have a dodgy rear vision mirror (the liqiud crystals inside get too hot and the mirror doesn't work) if you don't mind not having the "auto dimming part of the mirror anymore -just go to your nearest glass guy and get them to cut a piece to size and fit it over the top- sure beats paying nearly $700.00 for a new one- which will, in time have exactly the same problem !

If you hear a ticking noise up front like the old muscle cars with solid lifters when you start the car the tensioners are going bad if you hear ticking even after warmed up they are in real bad shape.A good independant shop will cost you about $1900.00 to change. Better than a blown engine for 10 to 15 thou.
Like the mirror idea.
if you hear

RE: Timing Chain Tensioners and water pump
they usually dont go.. cause it has better tensioners then the early xj's did.. if you start to hear ticking in the morning on a cold day then i wud start to think about getting especially if you just got the car and care about it..
engines on the stype usually outlast there expensive suspension components..

Sure, they want you not to worry. If it is the tensioners and they go KAPOWWwww it's a lot more money for them. I don't understand how some places can hear noises, hisses, grinding and say don't worry it's normal. I would wager if you asked them to put that in writing sign and date it they will not do it.

RE: Timing Chain Tensioners and water pump
Hi there. I recently opened up a 2000 S-Type and found 1 of the 4 tensioners to be in pieces. I am surprised that there was no class action lawsuit or recall fromjaguarforthe defectively designed plastic tensioners.
So you can get an idea of the cost: The parts will run you about $850.00 (USC) at a Jaguar dealer. The 2 primary and 2 secondary tensioners have been replaced with metal ones. The guides & slides should also be replaced because the respective plastic laminate tends to crack. Sincethe chains are offat this point all 4 should be replaced. The word on the block is that the tensioners tend to go after 50,000 miles. Once a tensioner goes, the timing chain can break like in my case. If it does, the corresponding camshaft may spin off time and possibly cause a valve to bend against a piston. If that were the case you would have to remove the respective valve head and address it accordingly. I believe the Jag dealer charges about $1,800.(USC) for the timing kit upgrade job. I hope this info helps you as well as others.Weigh your options carefully and Good luck.

Thanks Turbopowered68 -sounds messy and expensive! I can't hear any ticking at all in my engine, so I am hoping since it has 171,000km's on the clock that at some point in the early years of the car, the timing chain tensioners were done, good advice and thanks for the costings -hope I don't need to go there !

Now you guys got me scared. I do hear a ticking sound (2000, 3.0, 99,000 miles) but only when the hood is open.It ticks cold or warm. Can this be the tensioners? The sound comes from the middle of the engine, where the intake manifold is. If I open the oil cap, i dont hear any different sound nor louder ticking.Iused apiece ofplastic tubing as a stethoscope.

My Jag mechanic here in the Dallas area (http://jagmacjaguartexas.com/), who is great btw, said that this is a common problem on the 2002 and newer S-Type. Typically it's around $1,200 parts/labor for this one, so I wish you luck.
