Timing off?
After searching and reading so much on this forum my time came to become a member. Here is my story . . .
2001 Jag S-type 4.0 with 86k on engine ran great until one day came to work everything was good when it was time to go home car would not start won’t even click first thing to check was battery and it was good. The next day when i came to tow it home it started but it was running ReAl bad smoke coming out of passenger side (right) tail pipe. When it got home I scanned it and had no codes (errors). To me it sounds like timing is off on bank A, when i took valve cover off, both chains are tight. When i try to start it, it starts up one time right away and the next time with some problems. When it runs it would back fire occasionally and at the end it would just die if you won’t give her some gas. I check sparks and ignition coils they are good. think i covered everything wanted to recorded how it sound so you guys can hear but forgot.
Any help and ideas as to what could be wrong are greatly appreciated.

Read what you posted... you appear to have misfire = unburnt fuel so chances are you have one or more bad coils. Having spark is about useless on any modern engine unless the coils are working right. Or... maybe you have that other common cause of unburnt fuel, an air leak. (This is car 101, right?) Check for that... fuel trims would be a start. Then there's a bad O2 sensor. BTW, Search is great on here
edit: don't be put off I was in a hurry!!

The filden link works with Real Player, the first link needs to be deleted.
Wow, sounds like the motor is firing on 3 cylinders or so. There have got to be codes now. Did the motor sound that bad before you replaced the plugs and coils?
Did you have the intake tube connected in the sound clip? I hear alot of air being sucked.

Misfire
I would not run the engine much more til you clean that misfiring . Your fuel injectors may have a problem and it will just get worse.
My 2000 s-type 4.0 started having the bad misfires just out of the blue, and I gently brought it back to Normal with Techron concentrated cleared it by gently running the engine for several days. I guess I need to drive it a little harder.
I thought I might have to try Seafoam but Techron worked .

How can I check if my injectors are working properly?
