Default Tips on Mods.

Here I go step 2 on mods to my newly purchased 06-STR. First step was a little one = K&N and flap removal (all good). Plan now is repair curb rash (previous owner) along with a matte black powder coating on wheels. Car will be in my garage for about 5 days on jack stands, what else should I do ? I am thinking paint calipers silver but would like to details the R in green/red also might as well tos some H&R springs to give it a better stance.(tire rack has them for $299.00).
So I am fairly handy for do it yourself stuff, just dont a full on machine shop. I will seach on how to for calipers and springs but any tips would be great and am I over my head for spring install myself. I also have a Jeep Rubicon and swapped springs but on a 4x4 much easier access.
My goal is to give the car a little more attitude and personalize it some.
Thanks in advance, really enjoying site and car.
Jeff

Jeff, your on the correct path with the H&R Sport Springs. If you're handy enough to swap em on a Jeep ya sure can do em on an STR...then give her a 4-wheel alignment ASAP. I posted to your previous thread on other very effective mods so ya can refer to your previous thread. Good luck.

H&R springs should be the first thing any STR owner does. I did mine a few weeks ago and it transforms both the looks and the handling of the car. Make sure you use the spring compressors that hook onto the outside of the springs as they are the only ones that are small enough to fit in the area that you have to work.

You could put some cross-drilled or slotted rotors on too.

Are you sure the factory active shocks can handle the lowering springs without screwing them up? Also the Mina Gallery stocks their own brand of lowering springs. They have got to be real similar to H&R.

www.brakeperformance.com can custom make you a set of "Dimpled & Slotted" rotors for both front and rear for $700. I got them on my car, they look GREAT!

08Z06, the Mina Galleries springs leave her front high whilst the H&R's leave her level and work fine with the stock CAT struts.

Ran into a snag yesterday when one lugnut stripped an dcould not be removed there is a stainless sleeve over the lugnut . So i rand the car over to a freind that owns a body shop this a.m. and with about 45 minutes and some cool tools that I dont have we got it off. I returned home to take wheels off and get them to the shop for r & r and powder coating. Then back to my office and try to catch up, nothing is ever easy.

Also noticed a pddle of oil under left reat strut while on stands, is the strut bad ? Has anyone had problems with the stock lugnuts ? seems like a poor design.

The stock lugnuts suck. It should be another thing you replace since you have them all off go with a one piece design. This was the very first thing I did to my STR after hearing all the horror stories of people breaking them and since I have already had 2 flats I really didnt want to be stuck with a flat and a busted lug. I went with the one piece Dormans from Rockauto. Plus the chrome looks better the the dull polished look I think.

There are many threads from the January/February 2010 timeframe containing several options for solid one-piece lug nuts when a number of us here on the forum replaced our crappy factory lug nuts. This is a no-brainer. Just do it. You'll be very glad that you did....

RE the strut - that's a lot of oil, you'll need to replace that strut and the otherside while you are at it. Did you happen to let the axle hang unsupported during your jacking up operation? It's happened to me when the car goes up on a lift and the shocks/struts are sort of hyperexteneded that's when they leak.

now...tell me about that buggy!!

for sure replacing lug nuts = no brainer. currently the struts are all unsupported up on jack stands, thats when the left rear lost fluid. I am going to intall H&R springs guess struts also.
