So i get about 18mpg on a tank of fuel in my car regularly. I do my own calculations, not the on board computer. I bring it to the dealer for gearbox reflash they put 30miles on it and my tank average drops to 14. hard miles..... than i bring it to a different guy to replace some stuff and i guess the 13 miles they drove were hard as well because tank average is again 14mpg. Each time i dropped the car off with about a 1/4 of fuel left and filled up right after.

I am always concerned about them scrapping the bumpers since the car is lowered, but that is not my concern anymore.
What is the easiest way to put it into restricted performance mode?

Another day i was cleaning my calipers with lots of water and a brush. Afterwards the restricted performance light went on, but only initially and went out after i restarted the engine. Would disconnecting the wheel sensor do it?

You want to put it in Restricted Performance mode? That doesnt make sense. There are many other factors that could cause your MPG to drop. You are basing your calculations on a single tank filled up after someone else has driven it. To get accurate readings you should base it over a 3 tank rolling average.

 

Your MPG drops dramatically just with the car sitting as it warms up.

 

I think he is primarily concerned with the 30 miles and the 13 miles put on his car when he takes it to the shop. I assume test drives are part of the whole repair process, but surely 30 miles is a little excessive?

 

no i am not basing my calculations on a single tank, i have recorded fuel since day i got the car.

everynow and then i do full throttle runs with my car and the lowest mpg i had was in the ~16 for the full tank.

If you look at the picture you will know which 2 times the car was in for service. All i am saying is that in the 30 miles and the 13 miles they managed to absolutely ruin my mpg the only conclusion i can draw is that the car is driven hard and both times it came back to me with the sport mode enabled (i barely use it).

you may think i'm weird, but can you guys draw other conclusions from this data?

"Experienced mechanics have told me that there is no need to drive my car at WOT, or to run it all around town, in order to perform an informative road test. Please record my odometer mileage now that I am dropping it off, and call me first if you find a reason to necessitate an extended road test."

 

Just saying....if you took it in for trans problem, the extended road test is necessary to clear the adaptions in the TCM. I have had to put more than 30 miles on a couple because the procedure is very specific and if someone pulls out in front of you, you catch a red light or any other number of things, you have to start over again. I will highlight part of what it says in bulletin here:

10. Carry out the adaption drive cycle road test as follows:
• Ensure the vehicle is in normal mode (not sports mode) and the following conditions are met.
• Conduct the test on a flat road.
NOTE: The transmission fluid temperature must be above 60°C (140°F) and below
100°C (212 °F)
• Ensure the vehicle is at normal operating temperature so that the transmission fluid temperature is
above 60°C (140°F).
NOTE: The accelerator pedal may not be moved during shifts.
CAUTION: The 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts must occur with engine speed between the specified
limits.
• Accelerate from rest with light steady throttle without exceeding the following upper rev limits for
shifting in the table below.

Yep, and a quick phone call to the customer first will demonstrate your thorough attention to his vehicle and avoid any potential misunderstanding. As for me. I sleep in them sometimes.

lol not to make fun of you or anything ( im borderline OCD ) isnt it a little excessive to keep an excel spreadsheet of when you get gas? What do you use this data for? As for me im pretty sure they hot-rod my car a little...do i car? no just dont burn too much rubber, a lot of gas ( full to empty ) or more hten the necc amount of miles...My service tech is very good to me, he also drives an R and between him and the advisor/manager they take very good care of getting things covered. If he wants to make sure its running right go for it, he knows and respects that its my baby

 

yeah that trani adaptation can take a while in a busy area.. sometimes have to drive far.. to get to a safe place to do it.

 

i think you guys are missing the point and my quest for RESTRICTED performance has been berried in the rubbel.

i understand that they need to drive it to set the transmission (drive it carefully and slowly actually) so why the drop in mpg? if they drove it properly maybe the transmission would have worked like it should, after all the reflash has not helped!

i dunno why i keep this info, it has however helped me in the past on another car where i found a transmission fluid leak because my mpg has dropped to bellow 20 from 30.

 

Well the mechanic could just reverse the restricted performance anyways...and it is good to drive the car hard sometimes, its why cars smoke who arent ran that often because of all the crap that builds up if youre too easy on it! Most people would agree if your car sucks up gas at that % of change then there has to be a problem, glad you found it!

What's wrong with keeping a spreadsheet? I keep one including maintenance and miles traveled. It allows for good maintenance of the car.

 

I feel the same way when I get my car back from the dealer. It's like they beat it for 50 mi. before I get it back.
