The made-in-USA Cooper CS4 (the 235-50-17 is V rated). After another day of online research, I bought them. It's early, but I'm pleased. Very quiet with amazing traction and braking on wet roads (which we have lots of around here). And the local family-owned independent store made the price very competitive.

Our dealer-supplied Hankook Ventus ES tires are now down to their wear bars at just over 36,000 miles. These tires came with a 50,000-mile treadwear warranty, I contacted Hankook with all of my rotation records (which I do myself) earlier this week, and they are going to pony up for a 28% pro-rated credit to be applied towards whatever tires I choose next. The best news is that my next set of tires does not have to be Hankook in order to claim the credit....
My local Discount Tire manager will still honor his $560 out-the-door quote from early November for a set of Dunlop SP Sport Signature tires in size 235/50/17, so he ordered them for me today and they should be in his shop by next Wednesday. This is a 60,000-mile-warrantied treadlife tire with a great reputation for all-around performance and durability, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they hold up on our S-Type (which essentially serves as a highway cruiser)....
The Hankook pro-rated credit should bring my final cost for these Dunlop tires down to less than $450 for the set, so I'll report the final deal once the tires are mounted and paid for. While the Hankooks did fairly well from a performance standpoint and remained relatively quiet throughout their lifespan, they did not deliver the long-range mileage that I expect from all of our tires. Sure hope the Dunlops will meet that expectation....

Hopefully you have better luck with those than we did. Had them on our '01 4.0 and only got 16,000 miles out of them before hitting the cords with easy driving. Went to the Bridgestone Potenza RE960 on that car and have had much better luck. A quiet tire that compliments the handling characteristics of the S-type very well.
I do not think I would put them on the R or the XF though.

PaleRider, I hear you loud and clear. My long-time tire industry acquaintances have warned me several times over the years that most Cooper tires do not seem to be capable of delivering long tread life, even when given the best of care. A couple of my local friends who tried Cooper tires on their cars within the past 2 or 3 years (one is a Lincoln sedan, the other is a Ford sedan) essentially proved that to be true in their particular cases. Neither set of Coopers made it to 25,000 miles on those cars....

Your Ventus V12 tires must be a far better set than our current Ventus V4 ES tires. While I can't complain about their handling, ride, and noise factor on our S-Type, a 50,000-mile-warrantied set of tires should do far better than 36,000 miles when they're given proper care. They are now to the point of hydroplaning in heavy rains, so I'm looking forward to replacing them when the Dunlops arrive later this week....

I got 11,000 out of my stock Bridgestones on my Z and they were more than $1k to replace. I got the V12s for about $700 installed. As a an odd conincidence my STR came with them already mounted. I think it was last month's Consumer Reports that had them ranked in the top three, even compared to really high end tires. I'm more than willing to give up a spot or two in trade for a much lower price point.

My new Dunlop SP Sport Signatures arrived at my local Discount Tire store today and were installed this afternoon. Much-improved ride and performance as expected since the Hankooks were down to the wear bars. Hope I'll achieve the long treadwear life I'm looking for. Time will tell....
Since I went to the trouble of registering the Hankooks shortly after I purchased the car and kept all of my own rotation records, Hankook ponied up their 28% credit towards my new Dunlops without a whimper. Many thanks to Discount Tire for pleasantly working with me on that issue. My final out-the-door cost on the Dunlops turned out to be $420. Those of you who have stated that tire treadwear warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on are just plain wrong. All you have to do is register your tires, do the rotations on schedule, and keep your records. Piece of cake....
