Default Took the car to the track today

ZMax in Charlotte had an open Test & Tune today so I decided to run up to see what my stock STR would run. Of course I wasn't 100% sure I was going so I didn't really prep for it (had a full tank of gas of course and no ice to cool down between runs).

Turned out to be an awesome day. There were only about 30 cars that showed up to run, so it was possible to make many runs if wanted.

Here are my times:

1st) 13.697 @ 106.27
2nd) clocks messed up so times not posted
3rd) 13.994 @ 102.88
4th) 13.785 @ 105.19
5th) 13.827 @ 103.23

My 2nd run which I couldn't get the data on felt like my best run being the quickest off the line and least amount of tire spin.

I was happy overall. Got to see a new 5.0 and a 300 (Hemi) in my rearview. It is also my first time running an automatic at the track which takes some getting used too on launch.

Nice, I am looking forward to spring time so that I can visit my local track. Unfortunately, I am at ~6000ft in altitude, so I don't think my runs will be quite so quick...although I did take down an LS2 GTO 3 straight times not at the track.

SC STR,

Glad to see you made it to the track and congrats on your runs. Your MPH is very very good! Do you recall the air temps?

I went to MIR today and it was a bit warmer than I expected.

Elapse Time @ Speed - - - Air Temp
13.7 sec @ 101 mph - - - 78 F (spun twice)
13.3 sec @ 103 mph - - - 81 F
13.4 sec @ 103 mph - - - 82 F
13.2 sec @ 105 mph - - - 83 F (hood open and let engine cool for 35-40 min)

WTG SC, thanks for the call bud!

Not bad at all considering "no prep time" and being hot yesterday.

SC str, good going fella. For starters: Hard re-set of ECU then teach her hard throttle, modded air intake tube, low temp thermo, 1.5 or 3 lb pulley, hi-flo cats, and x-pipe will drop those times some.

LOL! Rick. I told my kids the day they turn 18 the local military draft board will be notified of their eagerness to serve their country. Kidding, but did let them know a stint in the airforce or navy is also a good place to start.

1320racer, it was in the mid to low 80's on Saturday. Felt really hot as the only shade is under the stands. My 1st run was actually about 15 - 20 mins after I got there (30 min ride to the track), so the car was still hot.

Joycesjag (Rick), I honestly thought about you but we went with the Adamson's (wives & kids included) and I wasn't sure I was going to run depending on what the turn out was. I expected 100+ cars there and was surprised to see the poor turn out. They are having it again this Saturday, so will let you know if I can make it there again. I was hoping to spend the day there, but the kids crapped out once they hit the heat.

SC Str, I live in the Charlotte area and missed the news they had opened up Test & Tunes. If the rain stays away I may just hit it this Saturday. I'm going to shoot for the morning hoping it'll be nice and cool

Tboneguy, take a look on their website as it looks like Saturdays will now their open test & tune days through out the Summer. Very nice track with the capability to run 4 lanes if volume increases. They were very leinant on code as many of us were in shorts racing. My past experience @ tracks required long pants to race.

SC Str, was a helmet required? I sent them an email to which they replied that any car running 13.99 or under will require one.

That is the norm...Pepboys and Walmart usually sell motorcycle helmets (approved) for under $40...If that's too much, find a $20 ebay knockoff from China...lol

I was under 13.99 and they did not say anything. They seemed to be very laid back and not enforcing anything. Even @ the tech area the guy didn't check out my car. He asked me to open the hood because he had not seen an STR and wanted to see what the motor looked like.

I thought it was 12.99 or under and if your running a convertible required helmets. I checked all the pamphlets that they gave me when I registered and they had not rules or requirements listed.

Offical NHRA rules state 13.99 and below require a helmet...State laws, local ordinances and track owners determine if they want to adhere to NHRA rules on non-NHRA events such as "street nights"...As stated, it all comes down to track employees if they want to enforce them...

Those are some strong trap speeds, most likely due to the wheel spin. I traped 110+ a few times on my slower runs with just and exhaust, meth inj, intake and drag radials. Your running pretty well for stock in the heat. You would most likely see low 13s to high twelves with some good cool weather.

I am going to run mine in two weeks when we have the track rented to test a few pro mods. A good full 1320 prep and the ability to let the car sit cool with no staging lane BS should show some good times. Think I am upping the spray to a 75 shot also.

Quickcat, how do you launch? I have issues trying to get the car to launch without massive wheelspin. With the DRs do you pegleg or hookup and go?

I get the rears good and wet, even start the burn out in the water to make sure both tires spin. With street tires you don't want a burnout but with DRs they need to be good and hot. I drive the car out of the water and get on the breaks. 99% of the time it spins both tires pretty well get both DRs hot.

I stage and bring the RPMs up high as I can. I don't remember exactly how much it would hold, think I was launching right at/just under 2k. I let the car come off the line and roll the Throddel on progressively as quick as I can. You know when you get it right, car feels like its shot out of a sling shot. Sometimes your to quick and it spins but I dead hook 9-10 times.

I run about 12-14psi in the tires. This time I plan to spray in second having the window switch shut it off about 300rpm before the shift and have it come back on ASAP. If I don't hit 11s I am going to be disappointed but if I had a dime for every time I was supprised at the track... Well you know the rest!
