Default Torque converter slipping

2005 S Type 3.0 ZF6HP26 when transmission shifts into high gear there RPMs go up and down until warmed up. It only lasts for maybe 15 or twenty seconds. Seems like the torque converter is not locking up until warmed up.

This issue has been discussed at length. There's a TSB (software flash) to address it, but it's not effective on all cars.

As Mikey has said, and then,

When was the fluid last changed,

AND,

Is the fluid level FULL.

AND,

How old is the battery.

See the other thread on an earlier car with strange electrickery issues. Its title is "Auto Gearbox Problems".

I know its a ZF trans, but the basics still apply.

+1 on all those

be very aware of exactly how to make sure the ZF oil is correctly full as it is awkward and exacting.

Fluid was changed about 2000 miles ago level checked just four days ago. Battery is about 1 year old. Replaced battery then because parking brake error. Replaced it with battery from Advance Auto, could that be the problem?

It could be the battery but I'd say very unlikely. It's possible it was badly manufactured but it's uncommon.

In case the car has developed a power drain or hardly been used then the battery suffers.

The TC etc would be top of my hit list.

I would make sure you have the latest software flashed into the transmission. The dealer can tell you that pretty quick. But it does sound like the TC lining problem. That requires a new improved TC.

See if this TSB matches your symptoms as a software update MIGHT fix it.
Couple of other documents for background too.

If it were the TC lining would it work correctly after it warmed up.
It works fine in all gears except when it shifts into high gear and then it surges for just a short time and then it is fine.

Remember we are talking the TC so the gear the tranny is in not too important. This ZF can lock the TC in the top 3 gears depending on conditions.

Now that you got free help do your part and post back the SOLUTION to your problem!

We have hundreds of threads that just stop in mid air because the guy either gave up or got it fixed. The only way this list is worth anything is from the experience of thousands of Jaguar owners.

We know a lot BUT we don't know your car or what it's doing.

it might be a while before I can get it reflashed. There is not Jag dealer in my area. The closest one is about an hour and a half away. As far as I know there is no independent shop in the area that can do it. Thanks for all the help. I will be back later when I get it to a dealer.

Took the car to dealer and had the TCM reflashed. Seems to have taken care of the problem, shifts great and no more surge. Service writer told me it would be under $150.00 but when gave me the bill it was $234.00 which $27.00 dollars of that was environmental supplies, whatever that is. I questioned the amount he was charging me and he took $50.00 off making the bill $184.00. TSB says that it is supposed to take .04 hours, pretty good hourly rate. Oh well I am glad to get it fixed. Thanks to everyone for all of the helpful info.

You may be looking at an old TSB where they did less.

Just glad you got it fixed! And reported back about the solution. Thanks for that.

So hard to get a good repair. But chalk another one up for the forum!
