Tracking down oil leak

Tracking down oil leak
Well after having the vehicle a few days, I noticed a small drip or 2 coming from the right side rear (nearside) engine underpan. After searching here I found that there is a "cheater" way of changing oil without removing entire underpan. Being a recent purchase, I contacted the convertered gas station dealer, and he mentioned "their mechanic" changed the oil prior to selling said vehicle, and that maybe he "cheated". Getting to the point now. I removed underpan this morning, it is filled with oil, BOTH sides of oil pan covered in oil. I have degreased and wiating for points of leakage. My question, Will it harm ANYTHING to drive a few days without the underpan? ('05, 3.0L,45,000 miles)

I wouldn't drive it very far until I changed the oil myself. I would make sure that there is a fresh filter, and the proper viscosity premium oil in it. If there is a chance that the selling dealer "cheated", I wouldn't trust them to have used proper materials either. Heck they may have just assumed it takes 5 quarts like most others, and under filled it. After that, it should be OK, just be very, very careful. There are lines that are mounted pretty low, with the expectation that the protection of the under-pan is there. I'm a DIY person, but if you've just gotten the car I would schedule a service at the dealer and ask them to go over it for you. It will seem like a lot of money for an oil change, but you'll get a certified tech going over the car and letting you know if there is anything to be concerned about.

Thanks guys! I agree to change oil & filter, although the filter does appear to be new (exterior). I am afraid its going to be the oil pan gasket, we'll see. Its wifeys automobile, and she drives 1.7 miles to work and then home. I saw the low hanging lines, I think they will be fine for a day or so. Thanks for the advise.
Hey Jeff, I worked on the Akron,Copley boarder for 16 years for a company named Great Lakes Industrial Knife, ever hear of them?

Ahh, so you escaped from the frozen North! I know where Copley is, but I don't get over to that side of town very much so unfortunately I haven't heard of them. I live in North Hill, which is off of Rt 8. I work up in Solon for a electrical connector supplier for the transportation industry. I'm not sure if I can say their name on here? Anyway, it's nice to here from someone who actually knows a little about this area.

Ok Jaguar Guru's, the leak appears to be coming from the pass. side rear valve cover gasket. I am undertaking this project on Saturday evening. Alldata claims about 5 hours (my timing 12 pack of cold 1's). My question, I have the (6) Intake gaskets, (1) Inner intake gasket and (1) Valve cover gasket, are there any other gaskets that I will need? Any advise on repair would be helpful as well. In photo I had wiped the oil drip off the bolt before photo was taken (rear most bolt)
Thank you again in advance!

Update, I have replaced the yellow IMT O rings (with the green 1's), pass. side valve cover gasket(s) and upper intake. one of those were a problem, but still leaking. Looks like jag_genius "knew" it. I am looking at replacing the oil pan gasket. I have looked at all the oil pan gasket replacement posts but all seem to be on an X. Any advise for an on my back with jack stands wrencher for the S? Alldata says about 4 hours start to finish. Also any guesses as to why the yellow numbers (6-16-07) are painted on the pan?

Yellow paint meens junk yard motor, ECEPT THEN IT SHOULD BE YR/MAKE/MODEL, NOT DATE. SO MAYBE IT WAS THE LAST TIME THE GASKET WAS DONE. IF ITS BROWN, ITS ORIGINAL, BLACK, ITS BEEN REPLACED and you have to jack up engine, and drop the steering rack from the subframe...uh yeah all on your back...glad its not mine, OH AND YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT HIGH ENOUGH TO TURN THE PAN PAST THE OIL PUMP PICKUP TO GET OUT

The conculsion of the story. It appears that the oil pan gasket need replacement as well. I started oil pan removal Thursday night, 3 hours to remove pan from motor. Drank some beers and patted myself on the back! Friday installed new gasket and pan, filled her up with lube juice 2.5 hours. Crossed my grimmy little fingies and drank more beers. Here it is Monday morning and NO lubbie juice on garage floor (no beers til later). I conquer with Brutal that the yellow date numbers were when the gasket was replaced and hopefully not a boneyard motor! All in all for 5.5 hours of my time and less than $75.00 in parts (cursid oil and filter price), I would do it all over again! I believe that I could actually do the job in 4 hours, as I now have found a couple of tricks. Oh yeah, did the job on my back.
Thank you to the techs
