Default Tranny fill plug 5mm vs 8mm

I have read several posts having to do with servicing the ZF6HP26 with an 8mm fill plug. Mine seems to be only 5 mm on my 04 S-Type V6. Has anyone successfully removed the 5 mm fill plug? How? Is this my imagination?

Yep, its your imagination or someone else somehow replaced the 8mm with a 5mm. Standard ZF 6HP26 uses a 8mm fill plug.

For your sake I surely hope it is NOT a 5mm plug, baldeagle15. I think that even 8mm is on the verge of being too small to be able to handle the pounding that these fill plugs typically must take in order to break them loose so you can change the ATF....

The fill plug is lower down, on the side of the transmission. I think I know of a plug you are asking about. Take a look at this illustration. If you are thinking that screw plugs 01.140, 01.060, or 01.100 are the fill plug, then nope. Its on the other side and lower down.

Many thanks, all who replied, especially heima. I think I was fighting bung 1.10 on the driver's side, just above the O2 sensor, which is 5mm. Are you saying that the fill plug is on the passenger side (US)? I was under there this morning doing an oil change. I'll check out the other side the next time I'm under there. I did find a source for a Jaguar special tool to remove the fill plug. It is tool #307-452 from jaguar.spx.com. It is pretty pricey, so field expedients may be called for.

baldeagle, to bad you haven't followed forum protocol and introduce yourself in the "New Member" section. There are many DIYs in the S Type "How To" section that include procedures, locations and much more with detailed pictures/videos, to full-fledged members.

Also include your vehicle details in your signature for us to help you. Quite easy to do, goto "UserCP", cleck "Edit Signature" add information and save...POOF.

OK, I have a confession to make. In all my years of amateur wrenching, mistaking the wrong bung for the fill plug on my tranny was the single dumbest mistake I have ever made. I'm sure you guys had a good laugh, but were just too nice to mention it. The right plug came out easily with an 8mm allen wrench and a BFH. All is well. Thanks again.

Something still not right? Everyone including myself has found the 8mm plug to be tighter than HELL!. I would have sworn the wrench snapped in two when it finally let go! I was pushing on the wrench with my foot and holding on to the underside of the car for dear life.

If you had no trouble I think someone has been there before you?

Don't worry about the mistake! The rest of us don't normally publish ours on the internet if possible. And yes I have made many a bone head move to report. I just try to cover them up!!!

Maybe so but hammering would not budge mine. Too much spring in the wrench absorbing the energy of the blow. Only plain old grunt got it moving!

Of course if I had a lift I could have used a cheater pipe to apply leverage but I was on my back using ramps so very little room to work.

I used 2 - 8mm (exact samesize) box wrenches on the plug at the same time with a BFH, it had bent both wrenches, but the plug did break free.

Like others, hammering didnt work and bent my wrench. If your car is on jack stands, i use two wrench on a sawed off allen key. I face the rear, and slowly apply pressure with my foot. Worked three times and no messed up knuckles
