Default trans fluid re-fill please help

I thought I would start a new thread so I can get a quick response. On my previous thread, drained the trans fluid and after last night to let it drip out got close to 4 quarts.

Thought ok, refill so put the drain plug in with bleed out of it. Started pumping new fluid and got to about a quart and 1/2 to 3/4 and it started to leak out the bleed hole? Why would it do that? or am I trying to pump it in to fast which is basically a hand pump?

My thought is when the new rebuilt trans was put in the guy did tell me he used about 7 1/2 quarts of fluid. Could he have over filled it and used more and not realized it? That drain bleed is the determining factor on the fill level correct? Did not want to take the pan out this time because my thought was do a fill, let it run a bit and then go to my regular work area that has a pit and then do the pan and change the filter.

In my garage with the car on jack stands and a little cramped right now to really do it right. Any thought appreciated very much.

I thought I might have to start it to circulate the fluid already in and then go through gears, turn off and continue the fill? Hoping someone will give me a response. Looking through the threads but cannot find anything yet. Thanks for the response.

I am not an expert on the Ford 5R55N but after googling "drain and fill procedure for a Ford 5r55n transmission" it seems to be the same process as the ZF6HP26.

-vehicle level
-pump in as much fluid as possible
-start vehicle run through the gears
-warm transmission up to 27º - 49º C (80º - 120º F)
-pump in more ATF while vehicle is still running until a slight trickle or drip(s) come out fill hole
-put fill plug in BEFORE turning engine off

I believe so, too.

I think someone (tdc?) did a write-up for the stickies on here.

Part of what happens with engine running etc kinda must be more goes to where it should be (tq conv or etc).

I've never done this btw...

Thanks Gus and Rick, but just to confirm, when starting the car, I leave the fill hole open as well as the bleed screw out? When starting the engine, with those things out, won't the fluid start running out of them? Will sound stupid here but the fluid moves around when the car is running right? It can't just sit in the pan when running? And if I drained out close to 4 quarts, should I just make the bleed screw tight and put 4 quarts back in? Then run for a while, go through the gears and do the check with the bleed screw after warmed up?

Gus just went to that thread and it helped. My thought is I drained out 4 quarts of trans fluid. The car ran great with that 4 quarts I took out for 50 thousand miles so thinking the fluid levels were originally correct or a little over. My thought is put the 4 quarts back in with the drain plug and bleed screwed on tight so no leaking. Start the car, let it warm up and go through the gears and then take out the bleed screw and see what happens. If it starts that small drip as stated or to the point of just dripping a bit, it is the level it should be and screw bleed back on and that should do it. Check in a couple of days to make sure. Any confirmation on this being the way to go from anyone?

As JagV8 mentioned with the vehicle running the fluid gets sucked into the trans parts and TC. If you shut the vehicle off BEFORE closing up the fill plug, I hope you have plenty of kitty litter because you will loose a couple of quarts of ATF out the fill hole.

Four quarts to me sounds alittle low, but again IDK.
