Unhappy transmission fault message

2001 S-type 3.0.
I get a transmission fault error and and an alternating engine system fault. Dealer says I need a new transmission, 5700 bucks. A European mechanic tells me it's a 900 dollar chip. Any ideas?

Failing battery?

The chips fail so rarely that you may as well assume it's not that.

It would be a pleasant, cheap-and-cheerful fix compared to a new tranny, wouldn't it? It would be interesting to see what DTCs are logged.

Go for the codes

BTW, that year car has a trans with no computer in it. Also, trans faults are often due to it getting upset because of an engine fault - such as misfires.

You’re getting a line of crap!!!

You have a dead common Ford 5 speed automatic and you can purchase one that will take up to 1000 HP for well under $2000 with TC. A stock rebuild is usually in the $1500 range here in the US.

As was said above there is no magic "chip" inside this unit.

Can you DIY? What is the car doing? Has the transmission ever been serviced? Have you checked the fluid? It's not that easy and it MUST be done correctly. Fluid level is absolutely critical for proper operation.

So before you get a rebuild do some research as there are a number of pretty easy repairs for this transmission that don't require removing it. The valve body containing the shift solenoids is a common problem and that's about $350. There are more such as a pre-stroke spring which is only about $15!!

Your best bet would be an indy transmission shop - they can pull code(s) and at least point you in the right direction - the soleniod pack and other issues with the transmission will flag specific codes.

If you get them - post them here.

Hi,
I am new here. I am looking for solution with my problem: my s-type (2.7 D 2004 with ZF gearbox) sometimes lights yellow mark and "transmission fault" message shows. It is really steering fault, for gearbox work properly (without gear changing), i.e. when fault occurs on 6-sth I can drive fast, but I cannot start on the crossroad, but when fault occurs on 1-th I cannot drive faster than 25 miles/h.
Each time when this problem occurs, the navi screen goes off for 2 - 3 seconds. Sometimes "battery" red mark lights and from this moment any "transmission fault" not occur, but when "battery" light goes off, gearbox problem returns.
I changed all relays, and checked fuses, finally I changed battery for 180 Ah / 120 Amps.
My wife said, that the problem occurs when I move quickly or suddenly sped, but I noticed that I get fault when I drive fast, when I go slowly and when car turning, and when I start on the crossroad. So there is no regularity. I have not had any problems before with X-Type or with an old XRJ. Something is wrong with the S-type?

There are almost no diesel owners on here as those cars were not sold in USA/Canada so be sure to ask on the UK forum.

You sound to have a fault unique to the diesel but one thing it might be is a loose/missing bolt on the side f the trans, where the shifter cable enters it. (I think you have the wrong symptoms, though.)

If you have any non-standard electrical items anywhere in the car, suspect those.
