Default transmission fault no codes

Ok so its been a couple months since my last post. I have succesfully trailored my 2002 s-type 3.0 from philly to upstate ny. It was known to have a transmission fault so first thing I did was installed a new filter and refilled what was in the pan. Fluid smelled pretty burnt but no debris or metal shavings in old fluid or the magnet. It shifts fine under normal accell from 1-4 than has a minor jolt into 5th. Under wot it shifts hard from 1st to second then from second to third down shifts than upshifts but only under full throttle. I see others who found codes for their transmission faults however I have no check engine light... just the transmission fault in the display a couple seconds after starting the car. Do u need a special code reader to get the code?

Check the threads, i found one that was pretty helpful on the z transmissions. I thought i read that one person took theirs and had a download applied and it fixed his lurching.

I am pretty sure it does, just don't know the cost. I have a little lurching every once in a while. Planning to take my Jag to Austin,Tx this summer when I visit my sister, there is a Jag dealership there....I am going to get a computer diagnostic and check for updates. Ask some of those folks in the threads, several here are pretty knowledgable and can help..I only own my girl for 1.3 months.

Well do some more reading? You have the common Ford 5 speed and it does not have a TCM inside it like the 6 speed ZF does. Everything run by the PCM/ECM. But that transmission has it's own list of problems. The top one being the valve body/solenoid pack.

You should be able to get the codes. Have you tried to have Autozone do it? Be sure and clear the codes while they have the reader hooked up.

+1
If there are codes then they're in the PCM and ordinary OBD tools should read them.

If it's a current fault then the MIL will be on, but stored codes that are no longer present leave it off. OBD will return codes, regardless of MIL.

I ran it thru 3 different code readers and no codes. Says transmission fault on display. Engine light is not on. I have read plenty about this transmission to know what could be the cause . I was mainly wondering how to get the codes.

I think this has never been reported before, unless you got your car year wrong. Do you have P1000 or P1111?

You probably have a stretched shift cable that prevents the transmission from being fully engaged in Drive.

It is the first thing that I would replace, along with the plastic shifter piece that breaks.

If your display is showing "transmission fault" then you should have some code(s) in there. Additionally, with the fluid smelling burnt - I would consider changing out all the fluid (very specific procedure) and cross your fingers. Yes, the 5R55N is a Ford trans but as mentioned they have a plethora of problems - mostly shown after the fluid breaks down (burnt color/smell - low fluid)

Did you check fluid level to ensure the case is full? Also, what type of fluid did you refill the case with?

Mercon V. I did not replace what was in the tq converter. Just a simple pan drop filter change fluid replacement. I am sure it is full. And I am not getting codes from obd2 scanners.

Maybe another fluid change to help remove the old stuff?

If no codes it might require a better scan tool like what the dealer has? Hate to recommend that but without a code we are really in the dark about what the car is trying to tell us.

The full dealer tool can exercise the solenoids individually I believe, in case that helps. I'd look into the shifter cable & perhaps the plastic part in any case.

Finnally got the code! P1788! Should I just replace the whole solenoid pack? I see them on ebay for 130 bucks.
