Default Transmission fluid loss

I have an 03 S-type with 80,000 miles. I bought it used about 1 1/2 years ago and love it.

Today when I pulled in my garage I noticed some "smoke" coming up by the windshield wipers. I turned off the car, but the fan kept going. After turning the key on and off a few times the fan went off.

I looked underneath the car and I was apparently losing all my transmission fluid...or at least that's what it looked like. It was coming from around the center firewall area.

Any thoughts on what this might be. I haven't had any problems with the transmission and I'm really hoping that's not what it is...especially since we have to install a new AC/furnace in our house this week.

Thanks for any help.

The coolant is an orange/red color. The 6HP26 gearbox fluid is an amber colored fluid so I would guess that you have a coolant leak. I think the fans running might be an indication of a slight overtemp but chech the reservoir level.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm having it towed on Monday to my mechanic. I'll keep you posted. I have been monitoring the engine coolant level and topping it off every 2 weeks for a few months now, but the last time I did that the coolant light came on the day after I topped it off. We'll see.

If this thread is any help to somebody one day, the problem was a cracked thermostat housing. A $330 repair with labor.

Apparently the fluid that leaked out was coolant, but it didn't look or smell like coolant to me.

I'm just glad it's fixed and that was the only problem.
