Klaus is the man - the kit comes with 6L of fluid I believe. I personally got 6.7L back in my trans (but I let it drain for a few days on my ramps) so, it might be wise to purchase an extra liter (especially if your trans is leaking..)

CTSC is where I got my kit from too, it was very well packed and shipped the same day I ordered it. They seem to be a very well run organization.

I am offering to sell mine to anyone who can use it and I would take a small loss on it to see it put to good use since I don't have an immediate need for it but if nobody needs one I will hold onto it and just use it in a year or so.

Wow that Lifeguard fluid looks like it is motor oil. Sheesh I am surprised that Beemer drove.

Thanks for the help everyone. I went with the Mercon SP fluid. The transmission is installed and it works great. Also, the transmission fault disappeared from the dash after we drove the car a few miles.

I went to 2 local Ford dealers to buy Mercon SP.Both parts departments told me that Mercon SP is no longer available and has been replaced by Mercon LV

.I was also told that they add the Mercon LV to transmissions containing Mercon SP---it is OK to mix them.

Has this transmission fluid appeared anywhere else?Does any one have any information about it?

If you cannot find Mercon SP locally, I'm sure you can find it all over the net....

I am not one to experiment on a very-expensive-to-repair transmission by trying out unknown, unapproved fluids in the hope that they work OK.

The approved fluids can be purchased in various places, not just at a dealer.

Given that this transmission was not made by Ford nor was it ever used in the S-type's cousin (the Lincoln LS) I don't think I'd listen to Ford has to say.

Why does simply sticking with what the OEM recommends seem like rocket surgery sometimes?

This one specifically lists equivalency to Mercon SP.

Valvoline.com > Products > Automatic Transmission Products > Automatic Transmission Fluid > MaxLife® DEX/MERC ATF

$25'ish for the big jug at Walmart.

I also use it in my Merc 722.6 transmission.

Just to complete the circle here---I checked Ford's Parts web site and they state that Mercon LV is NOT to be used in applications where Mercon SP is recommended. So I dropped by the dealership this morning and returned the 1L of Mercon LV with a copy of the Ford Parts information. The parts guy said he would refund my money but I would not be able to buy Mercon SP because it was no longer manufactured. I attempted to assure him that I would.

However, then the Parts manager appeared ---it turned out the parts man had just joined them after 7 years at another Ford dealer where he had been told that Mercon SP had been discontinued!

Amid profuse apologies, they gave me my money back and a free bottle of Mercon SP.

For those who happen to live in Perth Ontario, I have just completed replacing the transmission pan and transmission oil cooler lines on my 2004 Vanden Plas.

I bought 7 L of Lifeguard 6 while in Florida(from CTSC funnily enough). It turned out that I was a little bit short of fluid---so rather that spend time and money finding 1 L of Lifeguard6 I instead chose to find 1L of Mercon SP to complete the transmission oil level checking procedure specified by Jaguar.

I checked the aftermarket shops nearby and no Mercon SP was to be found---hence a visit to the local Ford dealer. Since The 2006 Lincoln Navigator( made by Ford)came with a ZF 6HP26 transmission and since Ford specify Mercon SP to fill it, it made sense to me to check the Ford dealer.

Hey- that's me!

No problem buying the correct fluid at Ford or Wallyworld or wherever. I own a Lincoln SUV too, the Navigator's little brother. I've sourced several parts for the Jag and the Lincoln from the local Ford dealer.

My comment was regarding their advice as to what to use as an alternate fluid in a Jag. Seems they did indeed give you duff advice initially.

Just be careful because although Ford builds the 6R80 under license from ZF and it is based on the 6 speed ZF in our cars it is not the same transmission. You can look at the case and see many differences.

For the Ford 6R80 transmission they have now moved from Mercon SP to Mercon LV.

Don't know if it makes any difference or not?

how come there is no talk about Pentosin ATF fluid? Is that not what ZF uses in rebuilt transmissions?

I expect it is not what they use. They'll use their LifeGuardFluid 6.

Make sure you get the right one.

There are several varieties of MaxLife ATF.

The one pointed out previously was MaxLife Dex/Merc.
