Transmission service...how many litres of Lifeguard is normal?Shop keeps needing more

So I took my car in about 4 days ago to get the transmission service done on my 2004 Jaguar S Type with 81,000 miles on it. I was given an estimate of $550 but now the shop said that although they didn't tell me the estimate was only if the car needed 4 litres the quote was only for the pan, filter, gasket, plug, labor, etc and 4 litres. Now after the car sat with 4 litres in it that they added previously, they added another litre, 5 total so far, and said it is still not enough but that 1 additional litre will cost me another $50. The shop now says they need 3 more litres at an additional $150 on top of the additional $50 for a total of $750 for the service, and they cannot find the fluid anywhere ang Jaguar is all out so I have to wait another 3 to 4 days. This would be for 8 litres of fluid. How many litres does it normally take when doing the transmission service? I feel like I am getting hosed here and need to see what you guys think about the cost etc. I understand the ATF fluid cost about $50 a litre but they quoted me $550 and now it will be $750 and they say it needs 8 litres total. Does 8 litres sound correct and does $750 seem reasonable for this service when I was given an estimate of $550? Please help, thanks.

It does vary depending on how long you let it drain. The most I have heard anybody get back in was 7.5L. That was after a 2 day drain.
When I had my 2005 STR serviced Brutal got 6L back into it. The ZF fluid is now down to around $20/Liter.
When I got my transmission serviced I provided the all the parts and 8L of fluid. I still have 2 unopened Liters left.
I wonder if they screwed up the refill procedure (It's not the easiest thing to do!) and need more to fix the error? It's absolutely critical that the fluid level be correct.

A normal drain, replace pan/filter, button it back up should only take about 6L max.
I allowed ours to drain over night with pan/filter removed and I put about 7L back in (slightly less).
Doesn't sound like the shop knows the proper refill or procedure on these ZF auto boxes. I can't believe they are going to get 8L back in. If they do, I am with tbird sounds like the shop did something wrong and are covering their behinds on your wallet.

I agree with everyone else, 8 liters is high but not unreasonable. However, $50 is where they are ripping you off. You should be paying less than half that amount.
