Default Troubleshoot Power Window Issues

Hi,

I've checked out many of the awesome threads on replacing S-Type power window parts, but I can't find troubleshooting info so I know what part to replace. So here's my situation.

On my 2000 S-Type, neither the driver side nor the passenger side window button will operate the passenger side window. When either button is pressed, I can hear a little clicking behind the dashboard (obviously a relay), but nothing happens to the window. All other windows operate fine. I checked the fuse and *I think* it's fine.

Does this mean I should replace the regulator? (And I can use the one for the Lincoln LS that costs $66 on Amazon)

Thanks in advance!
-Nick

You could swap the fuse for another, to make sure. I doubt it's the regulator but let's see what those who've had them apart say

I should also add that the sunroof won't retract. Maybe the two are related?

You could check handbook for relays & fuses, and the electrical guide if you want more detail.

Pull the door panel and check that you have power at the motor when you hit the switch. The motor is probobly bad

Does that require using a multimeter at the motor? Are the contacts obvious?

Brutal's a knowledgeable tech so you might be wise to just remove the panel and see.

If you find your motor is bad replace the motor/regulator assembly. Go to www.rockauto.com - Look up Lincoln LS - 2000 - passenger side motor & regular assembly - I believe it's $63.00 - I installed this part in my 00 S Type - works 100%

Good Luck.

Did the same thing. Some posts here on exactly how to do it and if you search Gus and go to his site he has a great outline. Just be careful if you do it to watch you do not break any of the woodgrain parts around the handle. Follow the guide. Part is easy to put on.

If you do use a Lincoln regulator let us know how it goes, we have members who have done it and others who have said they are different.

Norri, I used the Lincoln regulator and I did have to re-drill one of the three or four holes that it attaches to accommodate. When you take the old one out you will see what I mean. When putting the Lincoln one in one of the bolts attached to the regulator would not fit exactly through the holes in the door frame and had to drill a new one. Was off just a bit but enough to need the new opening. Worked perfect.

I also read or was told somewhere that the regulator could hold up better if when closing the door, you make sure the window is all the way up first and not sitting in the door. The door is massive when you really think about it and the closing with the glass down can cause it to rattle or move around a little bit or cause some issues. Not saying you have to do this so the regulator works or doesn't break but just an added precaution. Who knows.

It is always wise to open and close your doors with the windows all the way up and fully supported in their frames. This is true for any vehicle. The exception is convertibles - you're actually more protective of that glass if your window is down when opening and closing doors since there is no frame and therefore no support to the glass on three of its four edges when the window is fully up....

Thanks Amadauss, I wouldn't see that as a problem, but some people have said that the regulator was totally different, motors didn't fit or electrical connections were different.

I know several people have done it succesfully, maybe it's operator error with the failures, or the wrong part?

Norri, I wish I could tell you the exact model number but I think I got it here. Went to my local Lincoln dealer and picked it up there. I was very careful to match them up when i removed the inside panel to get at the regulator and they looked very much the same.

The Lincoln LS works on the front but not the back on a 2000 S-Type. No Drilling!

Looks like I was confusing things it was the 2003 + cars that people were having problems with. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...problem-53590/

Gus, now you have me guessing on this. And by the way, you were and have been a great help on this as you are with the other issues over time I have had so I don't think I would be a sane person if not for you when it comes to helping me fixing the Jag .
I really think I had to drill a little bit to get the regulator to fit into my passenger door but could be wrong. The mechanism was the same in every way as the one I was replacing but the areas where the three or 4 bolts of the regulator attached to the door frame but again I could be wrong. Getting old really sucks. Anyway the Lincoln regulator works and should have no issues installing it. If anything when removing the inside door panel from the frame I do remember the loud snaps as those plastic pieces snapped out of the frame. Thought I was breaking everyone as I did it but most were ok. Would definitely recommend getting this tool for the job.
