Unhappy Two weeks of ownership and my S type has locked steering column !

I purchased a nice clean looking 2000 yr 3.0 Litre Automatic S Type Pre - facelift model needing a little TLC . So having untangled the cats cradle of window regulators , set about fixing the central locking ( which didn't on OSR door) . The feed was found to be lying loose and had a scotch lock across two of the leads. Figuring this was done to allow car to lock I went ahead and plugged back into the actuator motor socket........ After 20 unexpected spontaneous cycles of lock / unlock I removed socket ......... Now my P&J lies dead with " steering column locked ". Having found similar threads on the forum I have not found a happy end to this. Is it an expensive Jaguar reset ? Any input would be appreciated , Thanks in advance

Hard to say but with a repair like that I would be very worried about what they did to rest of the car. With a complicated modern car you can't do that kind of repair anymore.

Do you have all the electrical diagrams? They are free on this site as I think you have a good bit of wire tracing to do. Hopefully you don't find more repairs of this quality!!

If you get it fixed please let us know how you did it.

Have got a copy of JTIS from here as it will help you lot when working on these cars.

Clubairth1 and Ducmon , I thank you for your replies and I agree completely that a complex repair requires sophisticated analysis equipment . With a car that is fixed to straight ahead locked steering and no ignition I can only resort to a winched tow away it seems. I am in contact with a relatively local specialist (Jagutek , Cambridgeshire ) who have been "talking me through" possible escape routes but so far not solved the problem which I think is transponder(s) not been recognised ... I do not have JTIS for my model but will look further when I get a chance. I will post any solutions if appropriate , but think it will be a Jag specialist job. Many thanks .

It sounds like it has gone into anti theft mode.

buy yourself a mongoose pro clone and get yourself a copy of SDD/IDS 1.30 to read the codes this will be a big help for you.

It seems the only reason for the steering locked mode , It's going to be difficult to move her away for repair. Ah well , one more try today then its trailer away I think.

If it is the PATS system what is the red light in the middle of the dash between the defroster ducts doing?

Flashing /blinking or solid or some flashing followed by a solid light?

Might be worth your time to find what the PATS error codes mean too.
Could be the key.

The LED lights solid for 3 seconds then extinguished. I think I am resigned to resorting to Jaguar Tech . repair , Key does not seem to be recognised but was programmed to a replacement instrument cluster recently. All worked fine afterwards .

Have you tried a hard reset of the car by disconnecting the battery, waiting about a min and touching the the two cables together or you can wait about an hour before reconnecting the battery. Before you do this make sure you have the radio code because you will need it.

This should clear any error codes and may allow you to start the car again with your key.

There is a technical service bulletin available here on the PATS
http://www.jagrepair.com/images/TSB/TSB2/S-Type/419Electronic%20Features/S419-12%20Passive%20Anti%20-Theft%20System.pdf.

It is 31 page long diagnostic article with fault finding.

All fuses checked when 1st had problem , UK model is numbered differently though . I will complete one last check in morning but REM is "clicking" . However , boot does not open (or passenger door actuators and steering column though ) Probably worth another look maybe?

FIXED IT ! Ducmon inspired me to check fuse No 1 in Luggage compartment . I found fuse OK but connecting cable had been nibbled by a mouse I think and was broken. New wire in place and 100% OK . Just about to sort locks but she is running and now movable !

I will call by for a beer when I am back in the UK.

Great news.

Now treat your self to a mongoose and start reading the codes.
and look for the problems.

Ha Ha ! yup I can go along with a beer . I must say that Kevin of JAGUTEK (Ely) said check the wiring , so that's how the fault was found , a combination of input + networking excellence !
