Default Tying an engine block # to a vehicle VIN

Hello Jaguar brothers and sisters....

I've narrowly escaped being an Ebay scam victim thanks to the courtesy of my own bank. I recently bought a used engine which supposedly had 20K miles on it to replace an overheated 4.0 S type in my new project car.

I've managed to wire brush down this non-working engine that probably has more like 120K miles on it and found an Engine ID # of 96JV-6F092-NA.

Is there a way (resource, whatever) that I can search with that number to link find the VIN for the car it came out of in order to determine once and for all (for my bank) that this motor was misrepresented to me?

Ask Jaguar Corporate. They probably know.

However, that doesn't look like an engine # to me. That's probably the generic ID of any 4.0 engine. I believe engine #s encode the date and time along the lines of 1B0201020304 as 2002/01/02 03:04

Hi

Thanks for the response - perhaps you could direct me toward the area on the block itself where the code is located? I have yet to find a number that seems to end in a date and time. Additionally, my local (Gaudin Jaguar Las Vegas) dealer service center seems to think that its impossible to backtrack to a vehicle VIN from the serial number of an engine. Please advise.

Thanks,

workshop manual says/shows where to look
a dealer will not know everything about Jaguar as they are not even part of the same company

Hey jagv8 come on spill, if you know where is it? No I don't have an S Type or the workshop manual.

Clay if you think about it you can't sensibly trace a fixed VIN from something that can be swapped out, such as an engine.

As jagv8 says the number you have found does not resemble any Jaguar engine number. His description outlines the system as I also understand it.

I don't have easy access to jtis (needs a reboot and I'm in the middle of things) but people have mentioned it's in there, plus it's my recollection too
