Default Valve cover, coils, plugs & imt job - last

Valve cover gasket replacement job - doing in Nov

I’ve searched all the threads and absorbed the information but am still a little confused as to the exact bits to get for this job.

JTIS says get new - valve cover retaining bolt O-ring seals, gaskets of course, fuel line O-ring seal and oil level indicator and tube O-ring seal.

JEPC (see diag) shows other “Grommets” etc. My VIN is M56944 2003 4.2 base

#3 Spark plug boss seals AJ82876 or AJ86874 x 8 – OK everyone replaces these
#4 Grommet AJ82872 X 10 (default qty shown) – what is this?
#5 Stud retainer grommet AJ85478 x3 - ??
#6 Grommet AJ86867 x 1 – Is this the bolt retaining O-ring? I assume 28 are required.
#7 Valve seal AJ82856 x2 - ?? OK get 2 and replace anyway

Does any one have the definitive answer and perhaps we can add it to the FAQ (and no the answer can't be "get everything").

Plugs, coils and IMT I'm all OK on!

Carate first off your 4.2 does not have IMTs.

Second are you purchasing OEM gaskets? Fel-Pro makes aftermarkets at a great cost. With the Fel-Pro valve cover gasket kit, you should get the valve seal, spark plug seal and the little rubber grommets (although they are blue) for each valve cover bolt.

As far as the other grommets, o-rings that JTIS is stating to get, well....its your call. I for one haven't replaced the ones in question. But at a couple of extra bucks, call Nalley Jaguar and order those up (don't forget to mention that you are a Jaguarforums member).

Hope this helps

Default Can't find Fel-Pro option

Thanks joycesjag,
No IMTs - damn then it must be the valve gaskets leaking! Had a P0328 (Knock Sensor), but thats just indicative of a coil and or plug going bad - probably one filled up with oil! Won't know which one till it fails completely then I get the right cylinder code.
Searched hi & lo for Fel-Pro for a 4.2 engine - no luck. Lots for 3.0s but no sets for a 4.2
Do you know if Nalley will ship to Canada? Probably just as cheap to hit the local dealers - no shipping charges or potential duty.

Not exactly. The P0328 code is the knock sensor but it's saying the cicuit for the knock sensor has a problem. Open, shorted, or out of range. As you said the misfiring cylinder will have a code of it's own.

But you are smart to pull all the coils and check the spark wells for oil and junk. It really seems that at about 100K miles or so it's not a bad idea to replace everything. People have spent much time and money chasing one misfire and then another.

It's not common for the 2003 and up V-8's to have leaky valve cover gaskets. Has yours been off before?

Interesting no Fel-Pros. Heres another link for gaskets, I found while searching for something else: JAGUAR V8,4.2L 2003-2010 VALVE COVER GASKET SET

Default Coils going bad

Covers have not been redone as yet so at nearly 110,000Km thats why the next project.
What happened before was many many "restricted performance" messages with no CEL on and then eventually a P0328 and shortly thereafter total failure for Cyl 7 along with appropriate codes. Cyl 7 and 5 spark plug holes were full of oil. (Still has a lot of power running 7/8ths!!)
My Auto-Enginuity freeeze frame for the P038 indicated misfires.
Thanks also for the gasket link. I have the plugs (local), coils (Rockauto) and gaskets (AutopartsCanada) so I am now just looking for the Cover O-rings, Boss seals and a couple of others.
