Those are the rear toe links and are most likely not the source of your noise. It is very common to have the rubber boots torn up like yours. So it’s time to replace them but it's not an emergency or anything!

I did have another thought but it's a bit of a long shot??

The lug nuts have crappy sheet metal covers and more than one person has reported metallic noises from them with the wheels turning. Usually you need to have the window down to hear it and sometimes going thru a tunnel or some other area where the car sounds are reflected back to the driver’s window.

Any chance that's it?

It's a real good idea to swap all the lug nuts out for solid ones before you get stranded alongside the road with one or more lug nuts that you can’t remove!!

The wheels and lugs are aftermarket that was also one of the things I thought it might be too.

couple of ideas. Check to make sure one of the brake backing plates is not rubbing on the rotor.

Also are you sure that you don't have a brake pad that is worn down to the metal on the inside. These can't be checked without getting in there with the wheel off. I have seen cars with a sticky caliper piston that causes just the inside to wear.

OP,
Did you rule out loose/broken brick inside your catalytic converter? If so, how did you determine?

Wow I never even thought of that, Thanks. Is there anyway to check the bearing without removing the drive shaft?

"I pulled up to the top of a hill and turned off the engine and put it in neutral and let it roll down and it still made the noise" This kind of rules that out the engine was off, I suppose it still possible but the sound was no different with the engine off or on.

Front brake pads were replaced and rear pads are about halfway to being replaced. when I took them off to inspect the pads I never checked if anything was rubbing against the rotor maybe i'll get under the old girl today and check, Thanks.

Possibly a warped rotor also... especially if the rotor was in contact with any of the brake pad spring clips...

Hi everyone, sorry for the absence there were some personal issues i had to deal with, but back to the noise, I replaced the toe links they were not the cause it had a very small chance of being the cause, it was a bit disappointing. as a few users have stated it could be a warped rotor, To me this is a bit unlikely, the sound is intermittent it comes on and off very randomly, when it does come on the duration of the sound lasts anywhere from a very quick hiss to last the longest I heard was close to a minute, A few bushings need to be replaced on the upper and lower control arms(wishbones?), but it doesn't seem to fit with the sound. A friend suggested it could be something hydraulic it does seem to fit, the sound seems to be metallic but I could have been mistaken, but now that I really think about it, it sounds more like hissing, anymore ideas?

i have the same exact noise, i have narrowed it down to coming from the cats or the exhaust resonator, i went under car and turned it on, pretty sure its coming from that.. jaguar wants like 750$ for a new resonator, i wanna go to junk yard and get new (used) exhaust system and try that out.

i have the similar sound(my car is Stype/2000/V8).Let me know if the cats and exhaust will cure the sound.Ind jag tech stated it was coming from the torque converter area.I am planning to change tranny oil as the first step. Also i live in woodland hills off 101.do u know a good ind jag shop? i took the car to Steve jag in canoga park, and he is only tad cheaper than the dealer.

i just took my jaguar to the shop, they put it on lifts and we were able to look under and see where the noise was coming from. it was coming from a loose exhaust system. there are the cats that are connected to engine, then there is two long poles that the emisions go through to pas to the resonator (silencer thing) then through to the mufflers. well in middle of cats and resonators it was loose, it needs to be tightened or welded or rigged with rubber bushing to quit tha awful noise down.

Joyce's Jag's rear tie rods did not make any noise prior to my replacing them. But if you want to replace them the following link will help you out if you DIY:
