Default Warm start issue on Jaguar S-type V8

I just bought a 2006 Jaguar s-type 2006 V8.
After driving it back 370 miles including four stops with no issues, on my fifth stops, 10 mn later I decided to move the car to a safer place. The car started and immediatly stalled. Only on the 3rd attempt did it start.

12 hours later, I did two stop (10-20mn) with no issues. On third stop and after 10mn the same issues happens.

Reading this forum, it seems a few owners have similar problems with the addition of the engine needed to be cranked a while to start. This is not my case, it sometimes starts when warm and stalls. Though, it could be just th beginning.

Also there is no error reported or engine light on. At the garage, the mechanic has not been able to reproduce the problem or pull any error codes.

I will be having a chat with the mechanic tomorrow but I guess I shall do some checks like the battery or try the technic of turning the key on/off a few times before starting the engine when this happens.

Anyway, if anybody had the same problem, I will interested to hear about it and how it was solved.

Cheers,
Renaud

It could be any of a few things. It's probably not the bore wash issue than sometimes afflicts the 4.0.

Most codes are 2-trip (engine hot from cold) so you may have to wait - if it can figure a code. Do not clear the codes! You start the 2 again from 0.

Ideas (get a cheap OBD tool like elm327):
1. when running check fuel trims
2. also check all the sensors you vaguely understand to see if they're plausible
3. check fuel pressure (OBD is easiest but there's always the old-fashioned way!)

It's not likely at all to be plugs so leave them alone.

See how far you get and let us know.

The 4.2 NA has no common serious faults so don't panic.

Oh - maybe change the fuel filter as they're quite cheap. But don't go wildly changing parts as there are a lot and wow it'll get expensive changing good parts for more good ones. You want data, is how I see it.

Check the fuel pressure and report back.

Really important to check it when you do a warm start. You could have pressure bleeding off or possibly a weak fuel pump not pressuring up enough before the engine starts.

You could have one or more leaking injectors too. When you finally get it started can you see any black smoke?

When it's hard to start hold the gas pedal to the floor. Does it start any better? Any worse?

Any chance you could spray some starting fluid in the intake when it won't start? Just to make sure it is a fuel problem.

Follow JagV8's advice on the fuel filter just to make sure it's working good.

I wonder whether it could be water in the fuel tank. This car I believe had not run for month at the trader. All windows had humidity inside. I filled up and ran the car today, 4 stops and no issue. I hope for warmer days to see if the start and stall problem happens again.

Thanks you all for your suggestion.
