Now, are any other parts of the trunk wet or is it just inside the tire and battery well?
I remember a few years back my BMW had a similar issue but the whole trunk was also moist. The glue holding the rubber seals along the trunk lid were coming off. I did a cheap fix with some super glue (haha).

had the same prob
water came from bumper bolts under the plastic covering boot latch
put black silicon as temporary fix
have to remove bumper for proper fix as old rubber or silicon washer or whatever sealing on the outside was used is hardened and cracked
cheers

agree , lot of other areas to lookk at , like trunk sealing rubber , leakage from lights
but the final solution if u cant find it was by BRUTAL i likes , punch the rubbers at bottom of trunk , it lets the water out and keep electricals out of trouble
many have found a solution too ,
as jag v8 suggests , search on it , this great forum has lots and lots of info on it
