I run Synthetic ATF (Multi vehicle) is our 01 S 3.0ltr, no concerns.
Not knowing what was in there, or how long it had been there, I syringed half the container, refilled with fresh, ran it for a day, did it again, and so on until what came out was the same colour etc as what was going in.
I just have this real "thing" about fresh fluid in a "flush" situation can "shock" some hydraulic systems, and they go legs up, and so does the wallet, so slowly does it has worked for me for a good many years.

Having issues with leak of power steering. Putting Prestone fluid in and that is probably a big no no. Reading this thread, I need to clarify on what is suggested. Hope this does not sound dumb and probably does but ATF? That has always stood for Automatic Transmission fluid for me. So Dexron III ATF power steering fluid correct, not trans fluid?

NO.
ATF is Automatic Transmission Fluid, and is used in many, many power steer systems, and many manual transmissions also (Ford, Toyota to name 2)
Different markets/languages/etc get the meaning of the product confused.
The aoutomatic transmission is basicallly a hydraulic unit, driven by fluid. The power steer system is the same.
The early S Types have a Ford rack, different fluid, and the later, somewhere in 2001 they switched to a ZF rack for the rest of the model.
The Ford rack requires special fluid, and is a PAIN to bleed. The ZF uses the ATF and self bleeds.
I run Synthetic ATF, as I said earlier.
