Phew, in one month I have copped;

new back brakes and discs after grit badly scored one disc, £300. A suspension arm to get through an MOT, £400 including labour, the battery at £110 and a MOT, £50 and the service at £150.

The £400 beats my other biggest single bill of £350 for a Volvo brake caliper and disc and pad which seized and went on fire. So in 21 years of motoring, I don't think that is too bad.

 

Out of my own pocket, it's been replacing all 20 of the crappy two-piece capped stock lug nuts with a set of 20 Mitsubishi solid chrome lug nuts. Cost me about $115. Coming in second would be new front brake pads last summer, about $65.

Under the factory warranty before it expired last July, the most expensive repair has been the replacement of the throttle body, throttle position sensor, and cowl due to "limp home mode" failure last May. It was probably close to a $1,500 repair bill.

When I purchased the car in December 2008, I set aside $2,000 in a money market account as my S-Type maintenance fund. When I won my diminished value lawsuit against Geico back in January, I took the $4,000 I netted from my small claims court victory and stuck it in that same money market account. Haven't touched this maintenance fund yet so I still have a bit over $6,000 set aside to deal with anything out of the ordinary that pops up with this car. Hope I have to use very little of this money for upkeep over the years so I can pass it along to our next vehicle, but only time will tell.

Annual property tax on this car is due at the end of March. Just under $100. Still debating on whether or not I will pay it out of my maintenance fund....

 

My biggest bill so far for my 06 when I had the dealer put 4 new tires on and do an alignment. Cost me $900.

My largest bill for a repair so far was $140 for a right front window regulator that I bought at out local Lincoln dealership. I did the repair myself in less than an hour.

Last February my wife's X-type pulled me into the alley behind Sacramento Jaguar and held me up for $5,100. The DSC Module and Throttle Body had gone out. Thankfully the Dealer was kind enough to make all the TB repairs for free however, the DSC was on me and with labour ran $3,000 which is about 1,800 quid (GBP).

Also in 2009 the Jaguar required a new windscreen, four new tyres, all new rotors and pads which ran in excess of another five million dollars; well not quite, but it sure felt like it.

 

So far just the oil changes at around $80 a pop. However, under warranty I have had the following replaced: rear differential, the coolant reservoir, heater control valve, air conditioner module and the the a/c condenser. The warranty has been definitely worth the money.

That's some pricey oil, Mike. Are you doing the oil & filter changes yourself or are you paying a shop to do it for you?

 

$2,100 for a blown head gasket. Well it was really more than that technically. I paid $249 for a new cylinder head, $77 dollars for a water pump, $82 for the timing tensioner, $35 dollars for the thermostat housing and give or take about a $100 for the timing chain and guide rails together.

Then a few weeks before that paid a shop $300 to fix a "coolant leak" and to flush the coolant system but I'm in the process of going to court for that because it wasn't a hose leaking...it was from the busted thermostat housing that they obviously didn't see that another mechanic had to point out to them. This car has cost me a lot of money. Not to mention the expensive oil changes and tune ups.

To be honest I was so excited to get the car I never thought about the expenses that comes along with it. Had I thought more into it I probably would've purchased something more pocket friendly. Even with all of that said I still love my car. Lol

 

Biggest single bill was the cosmetic body work I had done after purchasing the car. Reconditioned bumper cover and paint for it, new lower valence and wheel well liners, new tow cover (was missing) by the fog light, and remount of the upper door trim on both sides of the car and the rear driver side door. Total bill $1600. That was about half of the total from my "horrible week", but that was several events of the week...

I hope you don't mind my contribution... biggest one-time bill -> suspension work on my car; upper mounts, lower shock bushings, rear shim kit, eccentric bolt and alignment, all from the dealer, $1600.

I normally go to the Jag dealer. The apartment complex where I live doesn't allow maintenance. The dealer prices are competitive with outfits like JiffyLube and I get my car washed as well.

Mine was 1400.00 for a new cooling fan. (Out of pocket). About 2 months before that about 900.00 for an electrical short. (Out of pocket). About a month before that around 600.00 for a coolant leak.(Out of pocket).
My pockets are now EMPTY !!!
I have also had the Supercharger replaced but that was under warranty.

 

Under warrantee the dealer/Jaguar got to replace the engine which developed a bad rough running within a week of new. Two months later we got the car back. I don't even want to know what that cost. I never asked what the real problem was. Had to be bad for the whole engine.

Since then just routine maintenance--the 20k mile service they wanted $800. I had it done by a friend who is a former jag tech. Parts only. Can't argue with that!!

 

2005 STR-54K miles

Replaced DCCV $300 part.
Cracked passenger side wood. Don't know yet. Estimate $250
Center A/C vent cracked $90. New piece was cheaper than Euro specialist junk yard!! They wanted $120 for a used piece!

The other things are just regular maintenance. Front and rear brakes $250. Upgraded to the Akebono ceramic pads.
Change the coolant and all filters. Flush brake fluid. Ruined a rear tire from road junk. Fasteners missing from engine compartment.

I'm not surprised it was dropped (if it indeed was). With Jaguar looking to cut costs everywhere it can under Tata's ownership, pulling the plug on four free routine services for every qualifying car sold could save considerable money going forward. But it may also cause some grumbling and negative publicity among buyers who were familiar with the previous policy and have come to expect it....

 

But was it dropped? What about for cars already sold?

My guess is: no and no. Consumer groups just LOVE any manufacturer trying to go back on a warranty or the like.

 

Cars already sold would have to be grandfathered into the original program. But nothing prevents Jaguar from dropping the program for any cars sold after a previously-determined and announced date. They would have to be willing to deal with any backlash, however. Depending on their current financial situation, they may be willing to do so....

 

Agreed. Anyone know if even that's happened?
