Default Wheel bearing question

I posted a couple of weeks ago what we thought was a whining turbo problem, which has turned out to be the left nearside wheel bearing. As the car has only done 25K, and is five years old, I wonder if rear wheel bearings are a problem on the S type, or have I just been unlucky?

Sorry to hear that - you've been unlucky. Search for rear wheel bearings and see

have hot parts from driving and go through water hi enough to cover(like our Texas rains) and the rapid cooling will suck water past seals and start the failure process. Other than that some parts will fail prematurley and some never.

Check NAPA for the replacement bearing/hubs. I did the right front on our '05, takes about 20 minutes, easy job!!!! Beware there are 2 different hub assemblies, I would recommend removing the old one and taking it with you. I had to purchase from dealer, as NO aftermarket would fit. I think the price was around $350.00.

Rick,

What symptoms were you getting that pointed to the wheel bearing? Grinding noises? Slight pulling to the right? Sloppy road feel? I would think it's fairly unusual for a wheel bearing to fail so soon, but maybe not. With these S-Types, you never know....

To be honest Jon, we purchased an accident free vehicle according to or dealer....right..........I believe the previous owner ran the car up and over a curb on the right side. The little mud flap in front of the tire is missing and there is some road rash on the front right spoiler. The hub bearing had the ever so slightess vibration, barely noticeable.

I broke those off on both sides from low curbs. Scraped the bumper under side on a dip in a drive way. So maybe just wear and tear? I wish Jaguar had made the front areo tabs out of rubber and replaceable.

Yep, given the low front end ground clearance, any significant inclines and declines can easily scrape the plastic underside beneath the grill. I've done that a couple of times transitioning from the street to a steep driveway at a friend's house....

Just to let membesr know about the "whine" which we got in Eastern Europe. In company with a BMW diesel we had diesel quality problems and had inline diesel filters, water traps and air filters replaced. The Jag whines after wards and we assumed misplaced air filter assembly. Back in the Uk the Jag dealer tested the lot, placed a load of about 100 kg on the left hand rear and got the whine on a rolling road and concluded a noisy bearing, which at the moment is being fixed. Having had premature wear on the "automatic parking brake" pads, I an wondering if a dodgy wheel bearing was the root cause - will update when able. The whine by the way was progressive with speed and also very noticeable on over run, which is why we mis diagnosed the turbos as being the problem
