Hello,
Does anyone know why my S type 57 plate 3L petrol has a strange whirring noise on a cold start up, it lasts between 60 to 90 seconds and then disappears and only with a cold engine, if the car stops for 15 mins and i start it back up no noise. Its loud enough that a few people have commented in the car and walking past.
Many thanks
Mark

The serpentine belt is way past its use by date.
When it warms up, about 90 seconds or so, the belt gets "softer" and shuts up, noise gone, until it cools overnight again.
OH, and Welcome to the Forum.
Plese do an intro in the New Members Area when time permits.
Also, a "57" plate ID, means ZIP to anyone outside the UK, including me, so the actual build date, month and year, added to tour Sig, will always get the correct answers for any question you ask.

Hello Guys,
Thank you for your responses, im thinking i should get it in the garage now as its beyond my capabilities. I initially was thinking starter motor due to the volume as when concentrating on the noise more this morning it does sound like a wind down when the noise stops rather than the belt getting warmer, i also dont know when the belt was last changed. Aholbro1's reply is just scary to me![Smile](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Thanks again.

Nothing to fear.....
damper delamination is one of the most forgiving failures you can have. Yes, it can be expensive and/or time-consuming to fix. Usually (2/3 I've had) they make a high-pitched chirp or squeal like a slipping belt on cold start and then go away, never to be heard from again until 8+ hours "off" time. That was the Excursion and S-Type 3.0L anyway...my X300 made more of a rumble or clanking sound. So your description of the sound did not really make me think "damper failure" but rather the fact that it only occurs on first start of the day for a few minutes. I've come to realize they can make differing sounds. On the bright side, you generally have nearly a year of use from first onset of noise until it starts shedding and/or shredding drive belts!
Easy diagnosis:
Find your crankshaft pulley;
take some white-out, a dab of brightly colored paint...or even a Sharpie...what have you
locate the rubber-like polymer portion of the pulley
make alignment marks on the metal bits on either side of the polymer.
Go about your normal business
In a day or a week, but after a few starts and at least modest runs on the car, check your marks. If they are still aligned, that's not your problem. If they've separated, start shopping for a replacement damper - OR you could have yours rebuilt but you'll be down for a week, minimum, possibly 2 or 3, as you must remove it, send it out for refurbishment, then await it's return.

SOLVED (well, sort of solved LOL).
It turns out that my 2008 Jaguar (and probably other years/models too) has a secondary Air Injection Pump.
This has gone bad, on my jaguar. I saw a video that suggest to also replace the Secondary Air Pump Valve, which I will do as well.
I will post here after I replace both.
Thank you for all the help.
