If it looks like mayonnaise, that's a classic sign of blown head gasket.

Engine compression test / coolant system pressure test should tell you how the water is getting into the oil.

The white 'stuff' might be nothing at all.

Simple condensation can form allowing the creation of some mayonnaise in the oil cap and dipstick. Depending on climate and engine temp conditions.

@ John, check post #1 ^ I have merged the info into it.

Don't panic - yet! As above, it may just be short trips. Tell us more.

Before I sold my XJ6 I had the same issue. Turned out the dipstick tube had come loose at the bottom, letting in moisture. Simple Fix...

Aha! What happens is that moisture is a result of burning fuel - it's a hydrocarbon so the overall idea is the HC changes to H2O (water) and CO2. A long trip gets everything so hot that most H2O goes out of the exhaust. Short ones and some mixes with the oil and creates what's known as mayonnaise (not that kind!). Definitely don't panic. Some longer trips would be good for the car but at least change the oil more often (to get rid of the nasty stuff - it's not a good lubricant at all).

With such short trips you may also flatten your battery as it may be too short to recharge from the loss at starting.
