Window off track

It sounds like your window regulator broke. There are some plastic/nylon parts in the regulator that self destruct over time.
You don't mention what year you have. My wife drives an '01 S-Type 4.0 and the '01's seem to have problematic window regulators (at least that is what my local dealer parts counter guy tells me -- they keep them in stock and their service department has replaced quite a few).
I have replaced all four window regulators. I did the first three one at a time as they broke. I did the last one before it broke. If I recall the fronts are about $200 each and the rears were about $100.
I would rate them a 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 10 to replace. It would be very helpful to have a shop manual or alldata subscription for instructions. The rears are a bit harder than the front. Once you do one the rest are a piece of cake.

I have an 02 S-type. Yesterday I was rolling the driver's window up and heard a very loud "snap. " The window glass was cockeyed in the frame. I continued to roll it up (rather than down because figured that was the better case,) and it's now partially outside of the frame and weatherstrip. Is this probably a regulator issue? No one else has mentioned the loud noise associated with the problem and it seems to be more of a case of the window dropping into the door.
