Default Wood or Plastic?

Is it natural wood or plastic in S-type R in the dash and doors?

Hi Jaak,
As far as I know all the trims are a thin wood veneer "stuck" (for the want of a better word) on a alloy
backing and coated with laquar. Early trims faded in the sunlight and turned a greeny colour, Jaguar did a recall on them but didnit advertise it too well. It costs between £600-£700 to replaceall of them.

It is indeed Birds Eye Maple in the Black stain to it and its definitely real veneer just like they do on Rolls Royce and Bentley!

Silly question, what years were recalled if you know. I have some door trim that is faded like you say. Thought I just had to live with it. Now I might hound my dealer.

Hi Jaak,

Another silly question. Are there kits available in different selections of wood? I have a 2005 S-Type with I believe Madrona and would like a dark Walnut or a dark brown stained Birds-Eye Maple. I have a brown and ivory interior and I think the darker wood would look better.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply and by all means, keep the moniker. I have seen some stick on kits that supposedly match the factory woods, but I thought they looked kind of cheesy. I guess I'll have to get with my local Jag dealer for some ideas.

I have seen on some websites that some of the high end veneer suppliers did a fairly brisk business (at least until recently) with the yacht builders and private aircraft builders. Customers could get some really exotic veneers if they so desired. I'm kind of surprised someone hasn't explored the idea of doing something with the mid to high end car market. I was thinking either designing kits for customers or doing some kind of tie-in with car dealers.

Mike,

If you find a partner or supplier to test the waters for the S-Type, I volunteer our S-Type as a beta car for a high-quality light-stained birds-eye maple veneer. I never particularly cared for our Madrona finish. I think it is too yellow and just looks a bit washed-out for my taste. No, it's not faded - it's in great shape but it simply doesn't appeal to me....

Hi Jon,

I wouldn't hold your breath on this. I'm still in the dreaming about it phase. Best case, this may be a hobby after I'm retired, which will be some years out. Dave the wood prof is still safe.

I know this as work in the veneer manufacturing center at browns lane coventry.Any questions I will be happy to help
Thanks for the insite and info.
My STR has a cracked piece around the speedo and is still under warranty, Can the Dealer get these and replace them? I sure hope so.
Thanks.

I just had a cracked one fixed under warranty on my XJ. There was a crack in the clear coat on the piece around the clock. They actually removed my piece and sent it out for refinishing. Took 3 weeks to get it back. Looks good as new. Dealer said that Jag sends them out because they could never match a new piece to the existing wood color/grain.

Default Right Hand Carbon Fiber Kit

For those who have RHD S-Types, I saw a complete Carbon Fiber kit on E-Bay for about 80 or so Pounds Sterling.

Happy Hunting,

Mike
