Wood or Plastic?

Hi Jaak,
As far as I know all the trims are a thin wood veneer "stuck" (for the want of a better word) on a alloy
backing and coated with laquar. Early trims faded in the sunlight and turned a greeny colour, Jaguar did a recall on them but didnit advertise it too well. It costs between £600-£700 to replaceall of them.

Hello all. I can tell you it's made from veneers on an aluminium substrate. There are two layers of tulip wood and glue then the veneer eg walnut on top. These are pressed under heat and pressure and then trimmed. The small gaps are filled and then sanded by hand on belt sanders and finished on brush wheels. Next stage is the spraying of laquer left to dry then routered to remove excess laquer. They are sanded again so the laquer is even and finally polished by hand again. If one peice is ruined (eg a door capping) the entire car set is scrap as one side of the car is a mirror image of the other. I know this as work in the veneer manufacturing center at browns lane coventry.Any questions I will be happy to help

Hi Jaak,
Another silly question. Are there kits available in different selections of wood? I have a 2005 S-Type with I believe Madrona and would like a dark Walnut or a dark brown stained Birds-Eye Maple. I have a brown and ivory interior and I think the darker wood would look better.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike. I like the name, and might keep it!
The dark woods we did were walnut, and piano black.(There could have been more but can't think of any at the moment) Others were birds eye maple carbon and aluminium. I wouldn't think you can get kits but only replacements from jag or a breakers

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply and by all means, keep the moniker
. I have seen some stick on kits that supposedly match the factory woods, but I thought they looked kind of cheesy. I guess I'll have to get with my local Jag dealer for some ideas.
I have seen on some websites that some of the high end veneer suppliers did a fairly brisk business (at least until recently) with the yacht builders and private aircraft builders. Customers could get some really exotic veneers if they so desired. I'm kind of surprised someone hasn't explored the idea of doing something with the mid to high end car market. I was thinking either designing kits for customers or doing some kind of tie-in with car dealers.

Mike,
If you find a partner or supplier to test the waters for the S-Type, I volunteer our S-Type as a beta car for a high-quality light-stained birds-eye maple veneer. I never particularly cared for our Madrona finish. I think it is too yellow and just looks a bit washed-out for my taste. No, it's not faded - it's in great shape but it simply doesn't appeal to me....

Yes your dealer will be able to get the part as we have to make the parts for 15 years after production stops.( There's hundreds of car sets at jag and at lucas's stores ) Insist on having the whole front of the fascia replaced as this is made from one peice of veneer,so if they just replace one part the veneer will not match and could look odd. I just had a cracked one fixed under warranty on my XJ. There was a crack in the clear coat on the piece around the clock. They actually removed my piece and sent it out for refinishing. Took 3 weeks to get it back. Looks good as new. Dealer said that Jag sends them out because they could never match a new piece to the existing wood color/grain.
