I don't think the ZF transmission is "junk" at all. Look at the number of high-dollar vehicles from well-respected premium manufacturers that utilize it. I believe that the ZF's overall design complexity contributes to its reported problems, as does its adaptive learning feature. Put two very different driving styles behind the wheel of this transmission on a regular basis and you often wind up with a very confused automobile....
Simpler, more traditional automatic transmissions are often the best in terms of durability and performance. My 1999 Dodge Ram 5.9-litre V8 pickup truck has one of the most bulletproof transmissions I've owned in more than 40 years of driving. The truck will be 11 years old in February, it has not quite 58,000 miles on it, it still has its original factory fill of Chrysler ATF +3 fluid in it, and that transmission still shifts just as smoothly as it did when the truck was brand new. That four-speed transmission design is simple, elegant, powerful, smooth, and durable. Plus, it runs transmission fluid that costs less than $5 per quart, not $50 a litre or more for the Shell mineral oil required for our ZF transmissions. And my truck's transmission never gets confused based upon who's driving....

Pentosin is a 100% synthetic fluid. The Shell M1375.4 is a mineral oil based fluid. See this very informative thread. It really lays out the transmission fluid options and facts. I will be changing the fluid in my 2005 STR. I still do not believe in "Lifetime" transmission fluid. At least my definition of lifetime!!!
