Default Zf trans help with rpm

I have a 2009 XF with a 4.2. I'm posting this in here because we share the same transmission.I noticed that from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th my RPMs will increase 3 to 400 while shifting. Is this normal? It seems like it's taking a little bit longer to shift maybe because of the weather. I'm going to have the transmission fluid serviced and filter changed to see if that might be an issue. Has anybody experienced this and if so what did you do to fix it?

Are you seeing any P0730/P0740 codes?

Cool-

I'm not a transmission specialist but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night..

Is this temperature related? Does it flare when cold or when the fluid is cold?

How many miles are on the vehicle?

There is a sticky in this forum to help diagnose most issues..

Ok-

You mentioned you were going to do a trans service.

Is this your first one on this vehicle?

I just recently bought the vehicle. It came with all the service records from the dealer. It was a one owner vehicle and I don't see where that transmission fluid was ever changed.

Not normal.

Might be low on fluid. Might be clutch packs going nighty nite.

Best bet - check condition and level of trans fluid and ensure all is well there. If low, top off with either LG6 or Mercon SP, nothing else!

Clutch packs require a whole new rebuild correct? Or putting in a used one?

If this is the case scrap my initial advice. Get a pan, sleeve and new fluid into the trans stat... do not continue driving as those flair ups are telling you something is off.

Especially the 3 - 4 upshift slip...

That is the E clutch and usually is the first part of the trans to go nighty nite when the case is low on fluid.

Drive at your own risk.

Personally, if you take care of the above and ensure there is enough fluid (and no leaks from trans cooling lines) your gonna be all right!

I hope you're right. It only does it when the vehicle is cold. Im going to drop it off at a transmission shop 15 mi away Sunday. I'm going to have him just do a new pan and filter and connector. Also refill the six or seven quarts I'm going to lose from the drop with Mercon SP.

Definitely worth changing the fluid & filter (& electric cable sleeve) but that means ready access to at least examine the mechatronic part.

Try to measure the fluid that comes out so you can see if rather more goes back in, to confirm whether it was low.

I suggest you replace the rubber like bridge seal and tube seals behind the valve body while you are at it.

If it were me I would replace the solenoid valves as well.

I can't seem to find the part numbers for the seals. I found the valve body neck connector and have that.

Use the above as a starting point.

If none of the clutches are "badly" burned you should be ok after the service.

I was recently having an issue with harsh shifts that seemed to get worse over a couple of months. I decided to replace the pan and do a fluid change. I was still having issues with the harsh shifting from 2-1 and 4-3 and 3-4 mostly (2006 S-Type R has about 137,500 miles). I work at a small Mom & Pop used dealership as an Auto Detailer so I'm able to use their lifts etc. I found through research that the Mechatronic sleeve, valve bodies, and the bridge seals will cause this issues a majority of the time. I replaced all these parts, and the trans is shifting amazing. If you decide that the Solenoids need to be replaced, you have to reset driver adaptations on the transmission which requires computer software. I haven't replaced the solenoids at this point and it seems to be working great. Just search Youtube with the ZF 6HP26 trans and some useful stuff will populate. I found the Mechatronics sleeve, valve stems, and bridge seal from eBay for about $35. if you're going to have the trans serviced already, I would have them replace all those parts while the pan is off already to save an extra pan drop and fluid refill.

Best of luck!
