Default Help to identify a noise on my xj8L

Hi guys, for some time now I have been noticing and clunk/click noise.

When I drive slowly say around 20 MPH and come off the gas pedal it will happen also as soon as I press the gas again to speed up it happens again.

I initially thought it was coming from the rear of the car but yesterday it sounds like it's coming from the underside. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated thanks , NEIL

Have you checked the universal joints on the drive shaft? Also check the pinion to the differential. Most shops will check it for free if you don't have a way to get under her.

You'll want to check everything along the driveline. If you find/fix one weak link, you'll soon find the next one and have to get into it all over again if you don't check.
I would put the car on ramps or jack stands and let it sit for about an hour to cool off because the exhaust runs along each side and the shaft is deeper up in the tunnel. So poking your hand up there with a hot exhaust may be painful if you get a little lax.
Here's a link you'll grow to appreciate if you don't already have it...http://www.jagrepair.com/S-TypeTSB.htm

Just food for thought.... I've had only a few customer cars make noise where the splines of the driveshaft meet in the middle.

So I finally got under it last week I replaced the stabiliser bar bushes and drop links they were absolutely finished! While it was off I changed the diff oil too,............BUT I found the source of the clunk......I got hold of the prop shaft and found I could turn it back and forth around 4 mm ish

Meaning I have play I in the diff it even made the noise I have in the diff when I did it can this be fixed?

is my diff finished? And only replacement will cure?

Or can the backlash be reset on the pinion locknut?

Any help here guys would be appreciated thanks in advance chaps.
