XJS radiator replacement (newbie)
#21
Alex,
I did tell you also to consume HUGE amounts of alcohol before the adventure, and I know 100% that you did as you were told.
Seriously, it is NOT a nice task, and generally these radiators aee as they were ex the factory, never been out, and the same for the hoses etc.
Sd Greg has mentioned, when refitting, pay CLODE attention to the orientation of clamps etc, coz as sure as hell is HOT, you will need to tighten a clamp here and there after an hours running, and a few bolts etc may need tightening also, and if you have placed that clamp drive end in a dumb place, you are going to real happy, NOT.

Hi Grant
I'm over it now but when I took the Rad out of my Red XJS I sawed through the hose with a bread knife and then just lifted it out and didn't even bother taking the Bonnet/Hood off, I just disconnected the Bonnet/Hood Struts and then just pulled it up vertical without breaking the grill.
As always only easy when you know how.

There really isn't a Book on this you sort of have to make it up as you go along and while 'Greg and Grant' are the experts, this is the way I did mine.

eFans are a great idea, I used the same fans as Grant as these are cheap, easy to find here and work well.
Mounting will depend on what you end up using. IMHO the best setup is to find some kind of OEM fan for a large 6 or V8.
I tacked a couple of brackets to bottom of the radiator that the plastic shroud slips over, so removing the fans is easy.
Painted up and finished

Thanks all!
So, if I go with eFans, the large one that is attached to the engine needs to go right? So, to take it off, I just unscrew the bolts I can see on the back of the fan and take off? Nothing else to do?
The eFan I assume will not run off the engine but instead will be turn on by electricity, correct? So, I just need to find where to stick the hot wire to and that's it?
Maybe I should start a new tread on eFans, not to take this one off topic..

It is an AussieFord Falcon, around 1996 vintage. Doubt it was ever used in the USA.
This is one of many write ups I have on these beasts, and deals with what I did to my cooling system, Most of it will be unrelated to what you are/want to do, but there will be items there you should/may be interested in.
This one will assist you with the Electrickery you will encounter in your car from time to time.
You want more, or a step by step on those fans wiring, let me know, and I will write it up,
The attachments are NOT working for some cyber space reason. I will stooge around and see if its me or the aliens.

Correct you need to remove the mechanical fan and viscous clutch, You can leave the hub there.
You will need to run additional power and relay for the mechanical eFan replacement.
The way I wired mine was.
Run new 15amp power cable from the main power terminal on the firewall to to the fuse box (the one with the fuse for the existing auxiliary fan or an inline fuse will do ). then to a new 50amp relay pin 30 (horn relay will do) I located mine next to the auxiliary fan relay. Depending on the fan you will need a 20-40amp fuse in this line. My fans are powerful and blow a 20amp fuse on startup so select a fuse that allows the fans to start. The Ford manual for my fans uses a 40amp fuse for each fan.
Run another 15amp cable from pin 87 of the relay to the new fan and ground the other terminal on the fan.
I switched my main fan on with the ignition so it runs all the time. You need to run a wire from a fused ignition power source inside the car to pin 86 of the relay and ground pin 85 of the relay.

If the hub of the mechanical fan gives you clearance issues for the E fan (it did on mine) it can be unbolted OK, but you will need to thread the fixing studs a bit more or pad them out with a few thick washers, as the threaded part will not be long enough without the hub casting on them.

Now that I am here (I love all that space it opened up!), does it make sense to try to replace all the belts (or at least some of the belts)? Is it easy to do?
I don't know how fragile those Jaguar belts are. I inspected them and they appear to be holding up pretty well so far.

Our Internet is back, ADSL went AWOL country wide, again.
Replace ALL those belts, AND, ALL the coolant hoses.
Those attachments again, if they work.
Fans
Attachment 140905
Write ups.

Bleeding the V12 cooling system.doc
Electrical theory as per Joseph Lucas.doc

Thank you Grant. All attachments worked except Attachment 140905.
The Haynes section describing replacing the belts is very brief. One or two paragraphs, I believe. In essence, step 1: ease the tension; step 2: replace the belt.
How do I ease the belt's tension? Are the arrows on the picture below point to the correct tensioner bolts for the first two belts (counting from the front of the car)?

Bugga.
Brief is the word, HAHAHAHA, about 3 hours for those belts with the radiator OUT, as generally some IDIOT has tightened those 9/16AF lock nuts to stupid levels.
Greg has mentioned the Power Steer belt. The Alternator belt is fiddly also.
That attachment was of my fan setup, and I still cannot get it to work, the Aliens have arrived for New Years grief.

Thanks. I guess it makes sense to just do it now while everything is open. No excuse not to do it...
So, I see three belts as shown in the picture below:
#1 is the tensioner rod for the main cooling fan belt
#3 is the tensioner for the alternator belt, correct?
And the #2 is the water pump/power steering pump belt? Or something else?
An auto parts store (AutoZone in US) lists four belts for '86 XJS: alternator, fan, wp/ps, and something they call "A/C and A/P belt".
But I only see three belts. Where is the fourth one (if it does exist)?

There should be 4 Crank shaft C/S , fan (F), Idler pulley (J), forward most belt (1)
If you have the Haynes Manual #49015(478) Jaguar XJ12 & XJS refer to page 54.
Belt (2) C/S, Water pump (C/P), Power steering pump (PAS).
Belt (3) C/S, Air pump or idler (A/P or Idler), Air con Compressor (C/P).
Belt (4) C/S, Alternator (ALT). that is the lot If you need a copy of the Haynes manual IM me I have a couple of them.

Where is the fourth one? (the alternator one) I thought I counted three (visible ones).
(I am away from the garage right now, but wanted to study/prepare ahead of time so that I can do the belts quickly next Monday or Tuesday, before starting fitting the radiator back in to close up the space. Also, I do have Haynes book, but it is also where the car currently is -- at the garage But thanks for the offer!)
